(Daily Nation) — Police on Sunday arrested 40 Oromos for holding an illegal meeting at City Park in Nairobi.
Gigiri OCPD Vitalis Otieno said the men assembled at the park without notifying police.
He added that the public called the police when the group became rowdy.
“Some of them are in the country illegally.
“We are interrogating them and scrutinising their documents,” he said.
However, the group’s leaders said they had notified county officials about the meeting on September 29, 2016 and paid the required Sh3,000 fee.
The Oromo are Ethiopia’s largest ethnic community.

ETHIOPIA EMBASSY “INSTIGATED” THE ARREST OF OROMOS IN NAIROBI
A source from within the Kenya Police is confirming to me that the arrest of 40 ethnic Oromo in Nairobi on Sunday followed communication from the Ethiopian Embassy military attache’s office demanding the police to stop the religious gathering on grounds that “it would be a security threat”. Anti Terror police were also involved in the operation following the false alarm by Ethiopian Embassy. Kenya police claims the 40 were arrested for “illegal gathering” but documents availed to me show that the organisers had paid Ksh.3000 and got a permit from county officials. A number of those arrested have been released with police now claiming they are investigating “illegal presence in the country” of those remaining in police custody .
