The United States ignores the interests of the Oromo People at its own peril!

I honestly expected the U.S. Department of State to at least report on the ongoing #OromoProtests, now in its fifth month, including the hundreds of killings, mass arrests, wholesale eviction and dispossession of the Oromo people off their land and natural resources in Ethiopia in its yearly human rights report, however meaningless and useless the Report is.
What a shame! None!; literally nothing is reported in the State Department’s so called “2015 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices on Ethiopia” issued yesterday April 13, 2016 by the Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. There is no even mention of the phrase #OromoProtests.
I expected the leadership of the United States on this issue, in part, assuming the Oromo people’s security, political and economic interests are crosscutting and shared national security and economic interests of both Ethiopia and the United States. I still believe the geopolitical interests of the United States in Ethiopia and Horn of Africa at large necessitates respecting the security, political and economic interests of the Oromo people. The United States ignores the interests of the Oromo People at its own peril!
That said, the total omission of the Oromo from Ethiopia’s political map and total irrelevance in the Horn of Africa’s geopolitical calculus of global powers including the United States, United Kingdom and European Union indicates that the Oromo people have long way, very long way, to go to regain their dignity, rights, and get respected.
Serious mobilization and organizational works are needed beyond street protests. Only organized societies merit existence, respect and dignity anywhere, anytime and with anyone in today’s world. The rule of life in the world as Darwin aptly put it is the survival of the fittest. The Oromo people need to be organized and fit to survive in Ethiopia; and get respected beyond its borders.
It is critically important for any Oromo with a sound mind to admit to himself or herself that the Oromo people, today, have no single organization that will lead, protect, promote and defend the national interests of the Oromo people. It is very critical to start working toward serious societal, political, cultural and organizational changes. Or else, the very existence and survival of the Oromo people into the next century is in a very serious jeopardy.
