April 15: Honouring Oromo Martyrs
Let us continue to honor the legacy of those who came before us, who paved the way, and helped shatter forced assimilation and cultural conditioning, imposed on us.
April 15th is celebrated as Oromo Martyrs day every year. The day honors and commemorates those who defied successive repressive regimes of Ethiopia and fought and sacrificed for our freedom, liberty and equality. The day remembers the events of April 15, 1980, which saw the mass executions of prominent figures and leaders of National Liberation Movement on the diplomatic mission en routed to Somalia.
To them, we, the current generations have a solemn obligation to protect and uphold the very ideals that they had perished for. We have a national and moral duty to honor and celebrate those who sacrificed their irreplaceable life for the sake our very existence.
Earlier – much earlier – things were much difficult than it may look today. Our journey toward freedom in Ethiopia has been a difficult one, but our fore-fathers made it through a dark era. We did not achieve what we have today all by ourselves; it was our fore-fathers who paved the way for us, so it only befitting and proper that we respect, honor and lift them up before the world, so that our next generation will NEVER FORGET the barbaric and inhumane actions that were committed against them.
Toady when we celebrate the legacy of our fore-fathers, let us also remember #OromoProtests fallen heroes and heroines – who have proved to be true heirs to their predecessors. The bravery and heroic actions of our heroes and heroines past and presents alike – demonstrate Oromo’s resolve transcending generations. We can only repay the debt we owe them by carrying on the struggle that they had perished for.
When we remember and honor our Martyrs in our own actions everyday, their legacy truly will live on forever. May Waaqa bless the soul of those fallen heroes and heroines!
