Oromo liberation movement originated from pain oppression caused to Oromo society. At a period when poverty, illiteracy, ignorance and physical and psychological abuse reached an intolerable level in Oromiyaa social movements to ameliorate them started to show up and political grievances started to simmer. Among the social movements the greatest was Maccaa and Tuulamaa Self Help Association (MTA). It brought together many brilliant and experienced minds with vision. More than what its name shows MTA is known for helping the Oromo to start opening their eyes and see the situation in which they find themselves. The colonizer did not feel secured with the movement that it banned and imprisoned the leaders. Two among them, Taaddasa Birruu and Maammoo Mazamir were condemned to death though Taaddasaa’s was commuted later, to be fulfilled only by the succeeding colonial regime. Political consciousness has developed more than those days. Though the degree of oppression did not positively change, preparation and chance of overthrowing it has improved a lot.

During the same period there was a great political movement among the youth of the world. In the empire the Ethiopian student movement was the out spoken. In both MTA and the student movement Oromo youth were members. Those were the ones that were able for the first time to found a pan Oromo political movement. This movement at the end became Oromo liberation Front (OLF). Many of its founders made the ultimate sacrifice for their people, country and freedom. No organization has so far equaled the OLF in contributions to the cause of the Oromo nation. Before the advent of OLF one hardly refers to oneself as Oromo or dare to speak Afaan Oromo in public. The vernacular revolution, which resulted in the Qubee Generation that has now become the pride of the nation, is one of the uncontested achievements of the OLF. As long as this generation is there the national kaayyoo will have someone to inherit it, irrespective of the cracking in the original OLF. Thus as a vanguard harbinger of Oromo people’s bright future OLF has become a household name for the oppressed nation. The people are its only judges and jury.

The OLF vowed to found an “Independent Democratic Republic Oromiyaa” be it through armed struggle or peaceful means. That vow is what it is associated with. That is why it has won the hearts and minds of the whole people. This national goal of forming an independent republic is what is referred to as the original Kaayyoo. If this kaayyoo is distorted or changed the Organization cannot be that OLF which the Oromo took to their hearts though revisionist may say otherwise. Nowadays organization or organizations under that name are manifesting pretensions, distortions and wavering that their legitimacy and credibility has become doubtful. People, especially the revolutionary youth are not ready to give up on the name and objective of this august organization for which numerous heroes and heroines gave their lives but they can forego leaders and members that try to derail the kaayyoo. Their adoption of the red green red banner with the sun and odaa at the center and five pointed star above the Odaa introduced by OLF symbolizing national resistance and scattering and letting it fly throughout the world shows that determination.

Any genuine Oromo should not attack this vanguard Organization that was built with sweat, bone and blood of their siblings for the sake of shallow political expediency. If there is anything Oromo enemies hate it is the name OLF. OLF dismantled all they wanted to make out of the Oromo with force and deceit for over a century. The present enemy regime listed it as terrorist in its laws to wipe out the question of Oromo liberation once and for all. Because of such a policy no Oromo however submissive one may be can escape from suspicion of being OLF let alone a proud independent thinking Oromo national; OLF and Oromo have become synonymous. No constitutional provision or joining legal organization can save an Oromo national from being seen as member of the OLF. Thus, for Oromo nationals, attacking the OLF is like joining the enemy and helping it against oneself and in devouring Oromiyaa as it wished.

Those in discord with the OLF “leaders” and functionaries have to direct their wrath to them not to this icon of the nation. OLF belongs to the people; it is the spirit of the nation. To degrade it is to degrade Oromo history. Consider OLF as a priceless Oromo national instrument. This instrument could at one time fall into wrong hands. For any one that prophesies the liberation of Oromiyaa, trying to destroy the instrument, rather than disabling those hands is naiveté and political backwardness. Every Oromo organization exists because OLF existed. The name Oromo came to international attention because OLF sacrificed for it. Because it sprouted from the inner feelings of the oppressed people the enemy and those with a mission to destroying it are not successful for half a century and will never be. There were times when a group went to court to get patent on OLF and all its paraphernalia and to stop another group of Oromo activists from using the OLF name and its logo had American justice system not stopped them nobody would have known what they would do with it. Still many may continue insulting their compatriot’s intelligence thinking they are the smartest and can hide their motives. The Oromo say, “We know advancing movement of pumpkin vine” ridiculing such assumptions.

The founding fathers named it “Front” and drew a program that suits all Oromo nationals irrespective of their entertaining different world outlook so that everyone can equally participate in struggle for independence. It was intended to be people’s front not monopoly of a faction. That is how an independent national organization not affiliated to or patronized by any foreign power or specific ideology was formed. It is thus being independent of any camp, which is not liked by all those that have interest in Oromiyaa. OLF constitution provides for periodically elected democratic leadership as well as the Nation’s Kora session to be called every two years. But left a loophole not specifying how many times a person could stand for election. Kora’s session also started to depend on leadership whim. That gave rise to crude authoritarianism creating unhealthy environs. In Oromo tradition the term of office for leadership group is eight years without possibility of reelection. Those who were supposed to adopt that clung to the office not to let it go.

OLF’s support for independence of Oromiyaa is where the conflict with the Abyssinian political forces lie. Even that Eritrean current leader who rescued Oromo activists from then chaotic situation in Somalia in 1908, does not support independence of Oromiyaa is a public secret. To expect from someone that doesn’t support independent Oromiyaa to support an organization that advocates for independence without a proviso is unlikely. Staying in that country indefinitely by itself has clouded with suspicion the relation between some activists and the general public. The general lack of transparency around the leadership over years has also caused dissensions and stagnation in the organization. Western powers that helped the formation of the Ethiopian empire also still stand with their creation despite human rights abuses that include genocide. The Oromo requires independence to develop their resources and live in peace and happiness. As a people, whatever obstacle may be put in their ways to stop the struggle for survival and human dignity will be suicidal. Oromo do not want to commit suicide.

Instability of OLF is caused by holes created in it from different directions and by undetermined wavering leaders. Despite that the Oromo people have shown for years their loyalty to it. The current protest movement that was started by Oromo youth and shook the empire has its demands rooted in OLF program that most of them reflect Oromo national kaayyoo as forwarded “ORIGINALLY” by that program. Its success will partly depend on the movement’s ability to keep external infiltrators at bay and cutting in the bud internal treachery. Given correct tactics and determination no one can stop them. Slogan like “We struggle while learning” is more realistic than “Education after victory”. Oromo have no choice except keeping the momentum steadfast if they have not to relapse into servitude for more centuries. There is no way better than that of OLF that comes with freedom, prosperity, dignity and honor for the Oromo.

Ambitious undemocratic politicians must be watched out for they could provoke minor differences for their own personal advantage jeopardizing the lofty national cause as they have done in the past. Activists dedicated to the national cause have to beware that they are not operating in vacuum. There will always be those who are out to sabotage their unity by provoking discord by differences like education, clan, tribe, region, religion, class etc. Such activists are expected to be more intelligent and vigilant than the saboteurs.

The societal structure of Oromiyaa which was guided by the Gadaa democratic system is never told to have created problem for the nation. It was built upwards from balbala through warraa, qomoo, gosa moieties to nation. Oromo political strength stood at the highest institution. The lower tiers are where the spirit of the nation develops; they are cradles of tomorrow’s national leaders. That societal structure had also helped the ancients as one of the methods of checks and balances in political administration as well. Though from history we know that those will phase out with urbanization, there is no reason why they are not reconsidered in good faith till then. However they should not be over exaggerated as to affect national unity and strength at such a period when the enemy and the nation are at each other’s necks for and against the status quo. Such exaggerations of those politically not awakened and conceitedness of politicians is among others for the causes of OLF decadence.

The way youth movements of the old and the present started, gave hope for overcoming similar possible obstacles to Oromo national liberation movement. The old ones used crude methods that the present generation cannot imagine. The present ones that came at a time when information technology is at a high level have more chances of communication and information exchange than their elders. That is why their movement that in particular started in November 2016 is affecting the thinking of the surrounding. There are no more thinking obstacles in terms of time and distance but in dedication and quickness in thinking. Now they can rise in efficient and effective ways as one body uniting all Oromo even more than their 16th century ancestors, let alone their 20th century predecessors. That is partly why they are feared and brutally countered as the last effort to save TPLF interest from crumbling. This is the time when all-inclusive Oromo leadership, new OLF can be born from those that have risen in all corners of Oromiyaa.

TPLF interest covers wider than that it has in Oromiyaa. It includes the so far identified and not identified but not exploited natural resources of other colonial states. If defeated by Oromo protesters it is going to lose access to those resources, for which it is drawing a sophisticated design. Without control over those resources its mercenary army lead by Tigrawayi officers is going to disintegrate fast. Foreign aid alone has moral and capability limitations in financing its genocidal ventures any more. So the fight against Oromo protest movement is as well the fight to protect those TPLF interests. Thus Oromo youth struggle against TPLF is part of struggle of the oppressed minority neighbors fighting to survive from extinction. Oromo youth has to gather all strength to fight back not only the enemy but own divisive elements. We have shown that colonial government does not trust any Oromo to be a loyal partner. That is why it defined OLF is Oromo, Oromo is OLF and OLF is a terrorist. That means for TPLF all Oromo are terrorists. This being the reality, it amounts to strengthening enemy hand against the nation to agitate against OLF to be shunned by nationals because of self-centeredness and misguided behaviors of some actors. TPLF is an opportunist that does not tolerate other opportunists. We the Oromo, however opportunistic we may be we are from the same tree; we cannot fall far apart from each other unless picked by predators. We should not run away from our original kaayyoo. Kaayyoo is about the future. The status quo and our past are challenging us. We have to advance the kaayyoo and reconstruct future independent Oromiyaa that can speak for itself. To succeed, sincerity, transparency and commitment to the cause are imperative in all our dealings. Long live OLF! Let the Kaayyoo blossom!

The struggle has to Transcend Spontaneity | Qabsoon Tasummaa irra Cehuu Qaba

Before the sixties Oromo struggle used to erupt in different corners spontaneously. At a period when time and space were not conducive many heroes and heroines paid the ultimate sacrifice. It was failure of such struggle that led the ensuing generation to ponder over it. It meant rise and fall elders led to consciousness. The upcoming generation upon seeing that spontaneity has no advantage started to organize in cells and discuss as to what should be done. In that way all embracing organized struggle that have program was born. Those that started struggle with program announced to their people and the world that the struggle will be a protracted one. A considered and orderly struggle has no obstacles that it cannot get rid of and no abyss it cannot enable to cross.

An enemy that has a government organized over many years wants only to put out rebellion fast; what is called protracted is its nemesis. Protracted war is carried out by guerrilla fighters. It does not meet the enemy where the enemy wants but at place of its own choice. Its objective is to stretch out enemy force over large area and tire it. Oromo guerrilla fighters are continuing their struggle sometimes lying low and at other times bursting forward. They embed themselves like umber or firebrand in ashes the traditional way for setting fire later and come out at own convenience and setting fire. Wayyaanee wanted to uncover the umber and put it out ones and for all. That is why it is provoking the not prepared people to rise and loaded them with a burden no one can bear. If the Oromo rise they are like panther. No threat or fear can turn them back. Oromo have come out roaring for over six months. Their spontaneity is what the enemy wants. For this reason people’s movement have to transcend to planned and organized one.

The protest started by students in towns of Jibaat and Maccaa, cajoled not only students in Oromiyaa but also the whole population to join them. The adults should replace them and students have to go back to learning. Intermittently slogans that say “Education after Freedom” are being heard. From existing experience this is a wrong slogan that has to be corrected. It is better if replaced by “We struggle learning” and “We learn Struggling”. For Oromo children learning is preparing oneself to survive competition for living in the world. This is part of the front for Oromo struggle that could enable them achieve that. Because of colonial policy generations of Oromo children are left behind for years. Even today the number of those that did not get chance to go to school is greater than those that got. Children now learn in their language thanks to the immense sacrifices that were paid. But the control and how this language is to be used are still under aliens that have no tradition to equally treat human heritage; that is why education in the empire reflects aspirations of the dominant power. Federation that was supposed to treat all equally turned to be a tool for strengthening supremacy of aliens in all aspects. Language not excluded. This plan can be thwarted only by going in masse to learn and making enemy’s objectives to fail rather than quitting it. For this reason care has to be taken as to avoid slogans that suits enemy’s objectives.

What is being said has to be understood correctly. It does not mean that students should not participate in the struggle to liberate their people. But which students under what circumstance have to be asked. This writer appreciates and recognizes the role youth played and sacrifices they paid in the current protest movement. But under conditions where the people rose and took over the movement children in “gaammee” stage that are up to twelfth grade or those that did not eat more than two “Buttaa” unless school is closed on them, or education is seriously disturbed or if chaos reigns over the country and public peace and security is not at all conducive for learning, the writer believes that they should not participate in protest demonstrations. So that it will not be like the saying “Where there is no horse you dance with donkey”, children should not be exposed to harm as if there are no adults. In particular children in “Dabballee” stage or primary schools should not go out for demonstration that has dangers. The abuser has to be kept at distance with all costs. Protest is the concern of adults. If children learn it will be of great benefit for the country and the revolution. The world is developing in technology at great speed. Unless one adopts children to it the future will remain in darkness.

Their fathers are brave. They do not fail to fend off by force those that aggressively come to them. But the fight waged is not only those of muscles. It includes new weaponry, tactics and psychological ones that require especial qualifications. That is why education is necessary. The enemy wants to benefit from Oromo ignorance. Since the movement started it is being told that enemy soldiers are barring pupils from going back to schools. To be barred by the enemy and to stop by oneself are different for observers. Enemies wrong doings should not be covered by own follies. Starting before the movement the enemy had been creating several obstacles so that the Oromo are hindered from getting access to learning. Since then it had continued to abuse several institutions in Oromiyaa. Care should be taken even when pupils are peacefully going to and back from school, for the enemy may take it as protest march.

Oromo struggle is losing its luster because leaders stopped leading and progress could not be registered. The people who were supposed to be led started to march at the head of the leaders. Masses lack lack someone that coordinates their efforts and guide them are like bees without the queen; they would not know where to go and how to get back. For this reason the protest movement has to get out of spontaneity totally, elect its central leadership and start marching in unison. Be it as leaders or foot soldiers unless one is in the field of struggle it is not possible to lead people’s army by remote control. It is getting to be quarter of a century since the Head Quarters of the struggle is in exile. This is among the reasons that what was being tried at home did not materialize. Though some may claim the present movement to be organized, it doesn’t seem from observation tower; clear leadership and home Head Quarter is missing.

Those in the diaspora should not be expected to go back and lead for they have failed to do so in the past twenty five years. If they insist they can be there and lead, it requires only presenting oneself at the spot. But it will be realistic if those that are moving in the country chose their leaders and continue the struggle for which numerous heroes and heroines sacrificed themselves. What is going on in practice is gratifying but publicly assigning responsibility and accountability is being awaited. The time is that of Raabaa Doorii and Luba. The Yuba will also be around to counsel and give guidance in the matter of justice. Tyranny had banished people from their countries and made them “the diaspora”. The diaspora fits to support the home front, in foreign relations, knowhow, and supplying different materials. Conditions on the ground change hourly. For this reason no one has the ability to cop up except those on the spot.

The struggle of this great people has to be properly planned and waged. Reacting to provocation of the enemy and rush spontaneously could bring on the people and its struggle visible and unforeseeable disaster. Let alone when it gets excuses the enemy even without one will not go back from sabotaging Oromo education. Rather than raising hue and cry coming together in corners, moving under central leadership and common program has advantage. This will get rid of spontaneity and help to advance in orderly manner. Whatever happens spontaneously could create sudden shock. But what is thoughtfully planned ahead can foresee possibilities and there will be no surprises. Strategy of considered struggle is to defend oneself, weaken the enemy and defeat it. We have seen where peaceful struggle tried for six months have taken us. It was tried because some said it; otherwise, give the left when right is slapped is not Oromo custom. At such a time when people are highly motivated for the struggle, given proper leadership, OLA could have settled the score. The kaayyoo to struggle for was laid down. Options for struggle were also indicated. Nobody expects one to silently perish, but to go ahead and defend one’s right with a chosen appropriate option. The Oromo people will continue their struggle in highly organized manner until victory, more coordinated and more awakened. Oromo shall transcend spontaneity. Let protest movement blossom! Oromiyaans shall overcome!

Honor and glory for the fallen heroines and heroes; liberty, equality and freedom for the living and nagaa and araaraa for the Ayyaanaa of our forefathers!

An Oromo Dilemma: The National Question and Democratic Transition

slide-28(Addis Standard) — In his ground breaking study, An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy, the Swedish Nobel-laureate economist Gunnar Myrdal described America’s race problem as a vicious cycle in which whites oppressed blacks and then blamed their alleged poor performance as the reason for their oppression. The way to break this cycle, Myrdal suggested, was to disprove whites’ preconceived notions by extending to blacks the promise of the “American creed.” Once African-Americans started to demand that the principles of liberty, equality, justice and fair treatment of all citizens inherent in the US Constitution be extended to them, change started to occur. Myrdal himself was surprised at the speed with which the rampart of discrimination began to crumble, beginning with the Supreme Court outlawing of school segregation in 1954.

The Oromo national movement currently faces a similar dilemma. Is the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (EPRDF) an instrument that can be used for pursuing the right of self-determination or a feeble document that should belong to the dust bin of history? Some Oromo leaders assert the “Wayane constitution” should not be given any credence of authority as a legal instrument. Others, such as Tsegaye Ararssa of the University of Melbourne argue that the constitution should be treated as a basis for “engaging our opponents on their own terms just as African-Americans did in their own struggle against racism.”

To be sure, there is a clear justification and an emotional satisfaction in condemning a constitution that has thus far been used by the ruling party as an instrument for perpetrating crimes against the political opposition. However, it sounds conceptually dissonant to defend the Oromo Protests of 2014-16 as “constitutional” while cavalierly dismissing the very basis of their constitutionality. In insisting that constitutional rights and the federal arrangement be respected, Oromo protesters became defenders of the constitution against a government that with impunity violated the political, economic, and equality rights that are formally protected in that document.

In this article, following Tsegaye, I argue that the art of politics for the Oromo at this point is foregoing the emotional satisfaction of calling for a grand military victory over the “Wayane” and accepting instead specific measures that are likely to produce tangible and lasting results.

There are compelling reasons for this. At no other time in Ethiopia’s political history has a nonviolent transition to democracy been more desirable and achievable.  Additionally, at no other time in the past have Ethiopians viewed the Oromo as a force for democratizing the Ethiopian empire-state. The vicious cycle of uprooting an old system and replacing it with an “ideal” system has only produced abstract benefits and tangible harm for the Oromo and other Ethiopians. The Oromo Protests have unambiguously demonstrated that the nonviolent method is the more effective means for ushering in a democratic polity. Finally, the central demand of the Oromo national movement as articulated in the political program of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) was achieved when the right to self-determination became part of the 1995 Ethiopian Constitution. For Oromo nationalists, therefore, the FDRE Constitution, with all its shortcomings, can and should be deployed as an instrument that confers legality on the historic and yet unfulfilled demands of the Oromo and others. Not to use it would amount to disavowing one’s own victory.

Graduated victories

Since the early twentieth century, the Oromo have been regarded by those who hold power in Ethiopia as a negative force that must be politically excluded, marginalized and sequestered away from that center of power. This politicalmodus operandus came into effect in 1916 when a palace putsch removed Lij Iyasu from the Ethiopian throne. To be sure, the young prince’s actions, incorporating the people of the periphery and introducing reform measures designed to overcome the legacies of repression, exploitation, and religious conflicts created by Menelik’s conquests, were quite visionary and progressive for the time. However, the elite of the political center could not fathom the scion of a Muslim Oromo from Wallo sitting on the throne of the Semitic-Christian Empire. By removing Iyasu, the ruling class instituted a ruling pattern of exclusion and marginalization of the Oromo and Muslims from the political center.  Incidentally, this time was when ethnic politics was introduced to the political arena, not 1991, as is widely perceived.

One of the conspirators, Tafari Mekonnen, used the opportunity of Iyasu’s ouster to inaugurate an era of an absolutist regime in which ultimate power was concentrated in his hands. Under the imperial regime (r.1930-74) more Oromo land was confiscated and transferred to private holding, Afaan Oromo was denigrated and effectively banished from the public sphere, and the promotion of self-rule was rendered a treasonable crime. The regime emphasized assimilation of the Oromo and eliminated the remaining pockets of local autonomy that even Menelik had tolerated. This modus operadus of marginalization and domination was unleashed full force against the Oromo under the imperial regime. The repression helped to stimulate the creation of the Matcha Tulama Association, the OLF and the Bale Rebellion.

The 1974 revolution implemented measures that dealt a mortal blow to the economic base of the infrastructure of marginalization and domination. The Land Reform Act of 1975, written essentially by Oromo intellectuals, among others, in effect, “liberated” Oromo tenants from the oppressive grip of settler-landlords; and the use of Afaan Oromooin the media, in addition to recognition of Muslim holidays as national, chipped away at the most potent assimilationist vehicle for Amhara cultural domination.

After 1978 the policies of the earlier phase were replaced by measures that directly aimed at  combating Oromo nationalism, beginning with villagization in Harege, resettlement projects in Western Oromia, imprisonment and persecution of Oromo intellectuals and military deployment in areas where Oromo guerrillas operated.  In a way, the actions of the Derg regime ended up bolstering the OLF’s armed struggle against it.

The collapse of the Derg regime in 1991 coincided with a maturation of the Oromo national struggle.  The Oromo question, long disregarded as an inconsequential and meaningless cause in Ethiopia, entered into the international arena. The representatives of Oromo organizations fought for and literally put Oromia on the map, liberated the Oromo language from the shackles of the Geez alphabet, and elevated the issue of the right to self-determination to such prominence that its rejection as a constitutional provision was not an option. It is incontrovertible that Oromo nationalists have influenced the political process that led to the drafting of the current Ethiopian constitution. The question at this time is whether this constitution should be rejected or should be embraced and deployed as a political instrument.

An Oromo dilemma

In the current political dispensation, when politics is organized along ethnic lines, the Oromo have two dilemmas. The first is their awkward positioning in the body politic. Historically, the Amhara and Tigray elites have taken turns to dominate the political and economic center. Only these groups have been presumed to be legitimate contenders and holders of power at the center. It appears that the international community has accepted this presumption, too.  The smaller nationalities of the physical and political periphery are often assumed to be co-opted by the winning side.

The Oromo do not fit this scheme. They are too large a nation to be co-opted as are the smaller nationalities. They are also too large to contend for power with the larger nations without imposing a specter of utter domination simply because of their demographic size. For both the Amhara and Tigrayan elites, keeping the Oromo out of this space and out of contention for power has been their shared goal even when only one of them has achieved supremacy. The smaller nationalities also dread the political center being turned over to the Oromo out of fear that the Oromo will overwhelm them politically. Their strategy has been to temporize in tumultuous times and side with the winner of the political contest. Not fitting into this scheme, the Oromo always lived in a subliminal political status within Ethiopia.

The second dilemma concerns the Oromo positioning vis-à-vis the political center and periphery. In the current situation the Tigrayan elite don’t project themselves as the dominant group. Their political posture is that of a “champion” of the oppressed nationalities, the agent of change that actually resolved the nationalities’ question through a liberal democratic constitution and a federal arrangement.  They claim the following: that only the Tigrayans can at the same time dominate the center while acting on behalf of the periphery; that the Amhara elite cannot reasonably occupy the political periphery as oppressed and excluded group; that the Oromo cannot occupy the center because their demographic status intimidates all the other nations and nationalities.

But the Oromo cannot be treated as one of the smaller nationalities of the political periphery because they are viewed by the smaller nations as already co-opted into the center, this by virtue of the fact that they have occupied the geographic center historically.

Until they resolve their political positioning in the Ethiopian body politic, the Oromo will therefore continue to be in the ambiguous limbo of not being either integrated into the center or effectively relegated into the periphery. Meanwhile the increasing harsh attempts by the center to keep the Oromo relegated to the periphery are failing and causing a crisis of the state. From the Oromo perspective, the solution is now apparent in the discourse that is already underway among the Oromo. This relates to the discourse that is based in history and being promoted aggressively to push back on the notion that the Oromo are ‘newcomers’ or ‘outsiders’ to Ethiopia. This is now a prevalent discourse that the Oromo are Cushites who have lived in the Horn of Africa region since time immemorial. This has profound political implications as it nullifies the insidious narrative of the past that has so far been used by dominant groups to keep the Oromo on the political periphery.

The peripheralization of the Oromo has not been entirely the work of the Abyssinian elite. Oromo nationalists have tended to claim the political periphery in order to stress the narrative of their historical conquest and subsequent subjugation. Without denying that history, it is also historically accurate and politically sensible that the Oromo reach back and embrace their demographic positioning as a nation surrounded by Cushitic-speaking peoples: the Afar, Somali, Sidama, Gedeo, Konso, Hadiya, Kambata, Agaw and many more. I argue that the Oromo must reject the political project that relegates them to the periphery and instead step into and claim their position as a major actor in the political center. That will mean the Oromo make common cause with Ethiopian Cushites and act a unifier with all Ethiopians in their common aspirations for genuine democratization, sustainable development and sustained peace, and human rights for all citizens in a new Ethiopia.

I recognize some will say that this proposition is not a new proposal. I agree.  It is a position long held by the OLF, but for some reason has in time drifted into oblivion.  In a testimony of April 8, 1992 before the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Taha A. Abdi, member of the OLF Central Committee, asserted that the fall of the Derg created “an opportunity to democratize, transform and create a new Ethiopia in which the equal enjoyment of civil, economic and political rights of all the people are assured, where freedom of expression and religion are guaranteed and above all in which the supremacy of the rule of law will be established. … There is no alternative to the democratization of Ethiopia.” Leenco Lata, former deputy secretary general of the OLF, has written a whole book explaining why democratization is the only viable recourse for both the Oromo and other peoples of Ethiopia. In The Ethiopian State at the Crossroads: Decolonization & Democratization or Disintegration he asserts that, without genuine democratization and federalization, the Ethiopian state cannot escape another round of bloodbath and likely disintegration.

This position is not a matter of politicians seeking expediency. In his “Ethiopia: Missed Opportunities for Peaceful Democratic Process,” Mohammed Hassen had stated: “As an optimist who believes in the unity of free people in a free country, I have an undying dream that one day the Oromo, the Amhara, and Tigrai, and other peoples of Ethiopia will be able to establish a democratic federal system. To me only a genuine federal arrangement offers a better prospect for the future of Ethiopia.” Mohammed also states that only democratization could transform the Ethiopian state from one dominated by one ethnic group into a state of all citizens.

In this regard, Oromo politicians and academics are not alone. John Markakis puts it in starkest terms when he argues that Ethiopia cannot survive as a state if the political center refuses to integrate the peripheries into the Ethiopian political economy. In Ethiopia: the Last Two Frontiers, he advocates democratization that reaches across the marginalization and peripheralization of the Oromo and other peoples of Ethiopia.

The issue here is that only the Oromo can cross both the political and physical frontiers to establish a genuine federal structure and thereby democratize Ethiopia.  Failing to do so is to return to the backward-looking vision of the old center. As Markakis sums it up “return to … a centralized state under center control … can only be imposed on the periphery with greater exertion and force than ever. If this were to happen, it would condemn yet another generation of Ethiopians to authoritarian rule and civil strife …

The Oromo should take a page from the experience of African-Americans and insist that the promises of the existing constitution be honored. This will make the Oromo question less esoteric and more in line with the internationally recognized demand for human rights. Some, as always, would state that the Ethiopian system would never allow the Oromo to become leaders.  That is of course the point of this article.  The Oromo shouldn’t wait until the Ethiopians will ‘let’ them into the corridors of power.  They must use constitutional means to claim that access and gain that leadership.

Has Eritrea’s migration problem been exaggerated?

(BBC News) — The migration crisis in Europe has thrust Eritrea under the spotlight. Last year, more people fled to Europe from this small, secretive nation than from any other African country. The BBC’s Mary Harper has gained rare access.

One of the first people I meet in Eritrea is a young woman who tells me she has never visited her country before.

Her family fled during the 30-year war for independence from Ethiopia.

She was born in a refugee camp in Sudan and her family was later granted asylum in the US.

“I decided to come here to stay.

“I work in a hospital. The Eritrea I am living in is not the one I hear about in the news.”

Over cappuccinos and delicately iced cakes in the pavement cafes of the capital, Asmara, I meet a few others like her – highly educated Eritreans who have chosen to return from abroad to live and work, both in government institutions and private businesses.

I am free to speak to whoever I want and there are no government minders with me.

There is a strong cafe culture in Eritrea

Some older people have come to retire.

I visit one old man in an elegant villa, splashed with the pinks and purples of bougainvillea flowers, in what was the “European quarter” of Asmara during Italian colonial days.

An elderly woman, who used to live in Germany, lives in a far simpler home.

Like many Eritreans, she enjoys evening strolls along the city’s wide avenues, lined with date palms.

Thousands of others come to Eritrea for their holidays. They are known as “summer butterflies”.


Eritrea held massive celebrations for its 25th anniversary

This is not what I was expecting.

Human rights groups, the Eritrean opposition and media reports often portray Eritrea as a terrifying place that everybody wants to run away from, that is fast becoming empty of its youth.

Not everything is straightforward for those who come and go. Rights groups say a 2% “diaspora tax” is a way of controlling Eritreans who live abroad. They say only those who pay are given visas and access to other consular services.

Automatic asylum

Members of the diaspora have foreign passports so they can leave when they want.

People with Eritrean passports cannot leave legally without an exit visa, which is difficult to obtain. Plenty are going illegally, crossing the border and risking their lives in the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea before they reach Europe.

Human rights groups say they are fleeing because of forced indefinite conscription, enslavement, torture, and mass imprisonment, sometimes in underground shipping containers.

Such reports have helped Eritreans obtain almost automatic asylum in many European countries, although there are moves to make this more difficult.

A United Nations-appointed Commission of Inquiry says “crimes against humanity have been committed in a widespread and systematic manner” for the past 25 years.

The allegations are denied by the Eritrean government, and described as “laughable” by its Head of Political Affairs, Yemane Gebreab.

“There is no basis to the claims. Everyone who knows anything about Eritrea, including European governments, will tell you this is rubbish.”

Western and other diplomats based in Asmara tell me the Commission of Inquiry’s report is “unhelpful” and does not reflect accurately the current situation in Eritrea.

They say the country is authoritarian, but describe as “absurd” descriptions in the media and elsewhere of Eritrea as “Africa’s North Korea”.

An international human rights worker I meet outside the country says an estimated 30% of people who claim to be Eritrean for asylum purposes actually come from Ethiopia.

I’m told others are Sudanese.

Some Ethiopians and Sudanese share languages, physical characteristics and cultures with Eritreans, and it is significantly easier to obtain asylum as an Eritrean.

‘No war, no peace’

In spice markets, on rugged, terraced hillsides and in orderly queues for red buses, I meet Eritreans who do want to leave.

Many say they feel trapped in national service, which they have to enter once they have completed their education.

The majority are given civilian duties, such as teaching or working in a ministry.

They say they have little or no choice as to what role they are assigned or to which part of the country they are sent.

The worst part, they say, is that they have no idea for how long they will be in national service.

I meet men who have served for nine, 10, 12 years.

Officials tell me national service is essential because Eritrea is in a state of “no war, no peace” with its giant neighbour, Ethiopia, against whom it fought an as yet unresolved border war from 1998-2000.

Others have different reasons for wanting to leave.

Many complain about the economy.

Some want to join family members or dream of furthering their education.

“I want to study engineering in the US,” says one woman.

Some seem attracted by the glossy images of the West they see on the dozens of TV channels available.

Satellite dishes are like a disease in Eritrea; they are dotted on the roofs of houses in poor urban areas, on huts in villages.

I meet a group of young people who are determined to stay and push for reform from within.

“We need change and we will try to fight from the inside,” one tells me. “I want to be free”.

Another says: “We are afraid of our government. There are spies everywhere and we do not know who are they are.”

Losing its youth

Others tell me they love Eritrea and want to help develop their 25-year-old country.

“Eritrea is criticised for having no democracy, no parliament, no constitution, no independent media,” says one young man in a late-night bar, as he sips local Asmara beer straight from the brown, thick-glassed bottle.

“But what is the point of elections in Africa? They lead to ethnic divisions and violence.”

Many supplement the low pay of national service by doing other jobs.

Some only have to do their national service jobs in the afternoons, or for two days a week.

They spend the rest of time working in shops, as taxi drivers, for foreign embassies and privately-run factories.

The government is in the process of increasing the amount of money people receive when they are in service.

“We want young people to stay,” says Mr Yemane, “Eritrea does everything it can to create opportunities for them, such as free education.”

In a recent speech, President Isaias Afwerki said the West was deliberately trying to weaken Eritrea by encouraging the population to leave with its generous asylum policies.

Dressed in khaki, this tall, tough-looking man, with a big black bushy moustache, said the West was sabotaging the economy, “with the aim of creating poverty and starvation to instigate crisis”.

But now, after years of international isolation, Eritrea and the outside world are slowly opening up to each other.

Eritrea is making more friends in the Arab world.

This is partly because of the war in nearby Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is fighting Houthi rebels.

Eritrea’s Foreign Minister, Osman Saleh Mohammed, told me one member of the coalition, the United Arab Emirates, was using ‘”logistical facilities at the port and airport” in the southern city of Assab.

The migration crisis has also acted as a catalyst for closer engagement, this time with Europe. Eritrea does not want to lose its youth, and Europe would prefer them not to come knocking at its doors.

Lethal Government Force Brings Ethiopian Region to Fearful Standstill

Since protests erupted in the Oromia region seven months ago, more than 400 people, almost all civilians, have died, according to a Human Rights Watch report.

GINCHI, Ethiopia (New York Times)  — In a grassy field, a group of would-be 12th graders kills time under the midday sun.

No one is going to school anymore, out of fear. In a town crawling with federal and local police officers, even talking in a large group can be dangerous, the young men say.

Seven months ago, protests erupted here in Oromia, a vast region in central Ethiopia that surrounds the capital, Addis Ababa, on all sides.

Since then, more than 400 people have died, with thousands wounded and tens of thousands arrested in a campaign marked by the “lethal force” of the Ethiopian security forces, according to a new report by Human Rights Watch. Nearly all of those killed were civilians, it found.

“Many of those interviewed for this report described the scale of the crackdown as unprecedented in their communities,” the group said.

Getachew Reda, an Ethiopian government spokesman, called the figures baseless but acknowledged that scores of lives had been lost.

“The government regrets the fact that people were killed, because these were avoidable deaths,” he said. “But we believe in many parts of Oromia region, where the protests were quite common, security forces conducted themselves in a very professional and responsible manner.”

Ethiopia has claimed double-digit economic growth rates over the past decade. But the demonstrators argue that members of the Oromo ethnic group, Ethiopia’s largest, were increasingly marginalized as the government displaced small farmers, suppressed local languages and leased communal land to outside investors — all in pursuit of its singular vision for state-led development.

“Our rights were being abused, and we are the owners of this region,” said L.B., 20, a student in Ginchi who would not give his full name for fear of reprisal by the government. “We are only demanding our rights.”

Tensions between Oromia residents and the federal government are not new to Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous country. But this outbreak of violence is particularly bad. Demonstrations have erupted in cities and small towns across the region, and security agents stand accused of responding with reckless, often fatal violence.

It all started here in Ginchi last November, when, citizens say, the government sought to clear space for foreign investors by cutting down trees in a nearby forest and taking over a patch of land that children used to play soccer.

When local high school students protested in the streets, L.B. and his classmates said, police officers responded quickly with gunshots, tear gas and arrests. Demonstrations spread quickly to the nearby city of Ambo, and then across the region. They continued in Ginchi, too, where students gathered in December to march in the streets once again.

That time, the young men said, security agents shot indiscriminately into the crowd, hitting three men. One got a bullet to the hip, they said. Another was wounded in the arm. And their classmate Aschalew Warku, 20, was shot in the head.

In the Human Rights Watch report, Mr. Aschalew is No. 75 on a list of 314 fatalities across the region over the last seven months. Dozens of unnamed others have died in the unrest as well, the report estimates.

The government spokesman, Mr. Getachew, countered with numbers from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, which reported this month that 173 people had died during the Oromia protests and concluded that the police had responded proportionally.

Felix Horne, the researcher who wrote the Human Rights Watch report, voiced “serious concerns” about the commission’s impartiality.

“To suggest that the shooting of protesters was a proportionate use of force seriously undermines their credibility as an independent institution,” he said.

The protesters have seen at least one of their demands met. A so-called master plan to link Addis Ababa with neighboring towns in Oromia, which protesters saw as an incursion into Oromo territory, was canceled in January. The government has also met with residents and leaders to discuss their concerns.

But many activists say that their ultimate goals, which now include justice in the wake of brutal clampdowns, have not been achieved.

In Shashemene, a town in central Oromia, a 17-year-old student who asked to be identified only by his first initial, M., said that what had begun as a movement for basic rights had been reduced to a struggle to escape persecution by Ethiopia’s security agents.

“They are eager to traumatize us and kill us, and we don’t know how to overcome that,” he said, adding that he had lost two family members in the unrest and had been injured twice by baton-wielding police officers.

Protesting now, he said, would be too risky.

The young men who live in Ginchi feel the same, L.B. said.

“These protests brought the end of the master plan, and we stopped them from cutting down trees in our forest,” he said. “But that doesn’t change the fact that people are still getting arrested all the time.”

Plans to allocate farmland in Ethiopia’s largest region surrounding the capital for development sparked fierce demonstrations in November and spread for months, in the country’s worst unrest in over a decade.

Ethiopia has long been one of the world’s poorest nations but has taken impressive strides to industrialise its agrarian economy in recent years. However, reallocating land is a thorny issue in the country of 90 million people whose majority are subsistence farmers.

Authorities scrapped the land scheme in January, but protests and arrests continued.

The government rejected the findings of the report, saying there was no evidence to back up the death toll it cited.

In the 61-page report, U.S.-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Addis Ababa deployed its military and used live ammunition for crowd control repeatedly as the protests spread, “often with little and no warning”.

The watchdog said tens of thousands have also been arrested during the crackdown, whose scale was described as unprecedented by witnesses in the report titled “Such a Brutal Crackdown: Killings and Arrests in Response to Ethiopia’s Oromo Protests”.

“The government should immediately free those wrongfully detained, support a credible, independent investigation, and hold security force members accountable for abuses,” said Leslie Lefkow, the watchdog’s deputy Africa director.

Government spokesman Getachew Reda said HRW had “plucked its numbers from thin air”, adding a domestic rights watchdog had carried out its own report. That body tallied 173 deaths.

“Even one person is one person too many. The government regrets the fact that people are killed because these were avoidable deaths,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“But we believe in many parts of Oromiya where the protests were quite common, security forces conducted themselves in a very professional and responsible manner.”

The protests were a rare expression of dissent in a country where police are feared as heavy-handed and the government is seen as repressive.

(Durame) — SAUDI worried about the recent incident and also mobilization of heavy Ethiopian weaponry along ethio-eritrean border, asked ethiopia not to engage with Eritrean army along ASSAB front and Ethiopia complied.

The situation on other front’s namely Zalmbesa and Tserona and badme is very tense and both sides are mobilizing heavy weaponry and any slight miscalculation from either side could trigger a full scale war.

Many TPLF centreal committee members are opposing the move to engage eritrea in a full scale war at this time citing the fact that Eprdf government doesn’t have the required support from Ethiopians to mobilize the nation. In a strange move, Oromo and Amharas members of Eprdf are voicing support the war to get TPLF stuck between a rock and hard place. TPLF is fully aware that Eprdf is heavily infiltrated and it doesn’t consult the rest of Eprdf member parties on anything. Eprdf is eroded from within by slipper cells of G7 and OLF. If the war started now, it will be strictly a tigray vs eritrea war.
Tigrayan elites who sensed this unfortunate scenario now turning 180 degrees and advocating for war of attrition in contrast to their known agitation for TPLF to march toward Asmara!

war of attrition wouldn’t be their Forte either,Eritreans coind the war of attrition military doctrine during their 30 years war of attrition with Soviet Union supported mighty Derg army and came out as victorious! And, war of attrition, would give enough time to the mushrooming Ethiopian armed rebels to recruit and expand their activities to all corners of the country.

The June 12 2016 incident has thought TPLF not to believe it’s own propoganda that Eritrean army is weak and disarray and can’t stand Ethiopia’s offensives.

Tplf soon might attempt to restore the false hope it managed to instill on its diehard supporters that it is invicble and eritrwan army is weakened by sanction and defections by launching “moral restoring” attack and accompany it with fabricated drama of portraying eritrwan refugees in tigrayn camps as prisoners of war and so on! TPLF army is forcing Tigrayans on border area to move to safe areas and it is preparing for “lightening strike” and on the other side eritrea is solidifying it’s fortification and more likely TPLF will fail in its attempt to cone up with quick victory to prove that it is viable force.
The risk with this kind of gamble is that if it looses, it will risk of lossing it’s credibility of its handlers mainly US administration.

TPLF might try to convince Americans to support its war against Eritrea by threatening that it might reduce its contribution in Somalia in order to redeploy it’s army on Eritrea front, however if it pulled that card against US, then it might risk it’s only card that is garnering it Washington’s support for its role in a war against terrorism. TPLF will stretch thin and loose in all fronts. If US administration sensed that weakness,as usual it might start blowing wih the wind and support eritrea and Ethiopian opposition groups. For TPLF, neither a war of attrition nor a full scale war will take itself out of the quagmire it inserted itself..the oromo students protest will continue to a new level and other nations will also follow suit.

Bereket’s assessment of Eprdf is right on the money! In his latest presentation to the front’s bigwigs, bereket warned that unless Eprdf undergoes a radical reform, it will destroy itself from within….to late for radical reform. tplf is now hated from inside and Eritrea also seems poised to launch its counter attack to claim it’s territory and it’s place in horn of Africa and Redsea strategic place.

Shabaab claims to kill dozens of Ethiopian troops in southern Somalia

(The Long War Journal) — Al Shabaab, al Qaeda’s official branch in Somalia, claims to have ambushed and killed more than 60 Ethiopian troops in southern Somalia last week. The claim has not yet been independently confirmed by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and the Ethiopian government has yet to release a statement about the attack.

The statement from Shabaab’s media office, which has been translated by the SITE Intelligence Group, says that the “highly successful ambush carried out by a company of Mujahideen fighters from the ‘Sheikh Abu Zubayr Battalion’ began on Thursday (June 11) afternoon.” The battalion identified in the statement is named after the former emir of Al Shabaab, who was killed in a US drone strike last year.

The jihadist group continues by saying that the unit destroyed 13 vehicles and killed dozens of soldiers in the Ethiopian convoy after “mowing them down with machine guns.” Shabaab claims that this ambush caused many in the Ethiopian ranks to retreat, leaving behind military hardware and “many of their comrades.”

When the Ethiopian contingent sent reinforcements to the area the next morning, Shabaab said that it targeted the convoy “with a martyrdom operation,” or suicide bombing. The jihadists claimed to have destroyed many more vehicles and killed several more Ethiopian troops in this attack. The spokesman ended the statement by saying, “This military feat against the foot soldiers of the Western crusaders serves as another poignant reminder to the disbelieving armies that the cost of invading Muslims lands is indeed bloody.”

Photos released by the jihadist group, many of which are too graphic to be published by The Long War Journal, show several burning vehicles, dozens of captured weapons, and the bodies of many Ethiopian troops.

It was also reported that Shabaab closed the main road between Mogadishu, the Somali capital, and Baidoa, where these attacks took place. A Shabaab official reportedly told Reuters that its forces “made the road impassable.” In doing so, the jihadists blocked any aid or extra reinforcements from reaching the area.

The attack on Ethiopian troops took place days before the al Qaeda branch attacked a Kenyan military base near the Somali border. The assault was repulsed and 11 militants were killed. One fighter who was killed was identified as British national Thomas Evans. Evans, who went by Abdul Hakim, originally said that he had joined the jihadist group back in 2012, according to his mother.

According to the BBC, “at least 50 British citizens are believed to have joined al Shabaab.” Kenyan authorities have also issued a $100,000 reward for the capture of a German national. The German, Andreas Martin Muller, is also said to have taken part in the attack on the Kenyan military base.

Caucasian fighters in the jihadist group have been increasingly featured in recent Shabaab propaganda from Kenya. In a video released in March showing the 2014 Mpeketoni attack in Kenya, several can be seen throughout the footage. In another released earlier this month, the same jihadists can be seen again in one scene of the video. Thomas Evans is thought to have been featured in one or both of these releases.

While the current media focus is on the Islamic State’s spectacular gains in both Iraq and Syria, Shabaab and its predecessor, the Islamic Courts Union, have controlled extensive areas of Somalia, including major cities, several times since 2006. Even today, Shabaab controls large portions of the countryside in southern and central Somalia, and still runs some towns and cities. An African Union offensive by forces from Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, and Kenya has managed to drive Shabaab from the major cities of Mogadishu and Kismayo, but four years after the start of that operation and another last year, Shabaab still controls vast portions of the country.

Shabaab also retains the ability to mount attacks in Somalia and neighboring countries. In February, Shabaab was able to penetrate security in a heavily guarded area of Mogadishu and kill several members of the Somali government in a suicide assault.  In April, the jihadist group killed 147 people in an attack on a university in northeastern Kenya, which followed the deadly Westgate mall attack in 2013. Last year, the jihadist group was also able to mount a suicide attack in Djibouti, which killed one Turkish national.

(Tesfanews) — In 1998-2000, the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) unleashed a deadly war against the people of Eritrea under the pretext of a boarder dispute. Soon thereafter it was evident that the agenda was and remains regime change and access to sea for greater (Abay) Tigray.

However, after over 120,000 Ethiopian and 19,000 Eritrean deaths, regime change by military force is unattainable. As a result these agendas have now taken various forms. The minority genocidal TPLF regime is consistently attempting to topple the government of Eritrea with the help of Washington.

These include unjustifiable illegal sanctions, attempt to isolate Eritrea, economic strangulations, intimidation of Diaspora Eritreans to stop supporting their government, attempts to stop the mining industry from taking-off and the sabotages are endless.

The first sanction that Ambassador Susan Rice pushed and passed in Christmas of 2009-2010 was arms embargo designed to tie the hands of Eritrea so the TPLF can have its way against Eritrea and failed. Since, in collaboration with the TPLF, the Obama administration has declared war on Eritrea’s youth and campaigned to ensure youth flight en-mass. On a speech at the Clinton foundation September 25, 2012, President Barack Obama said,

“I recently renewed sanctions on some of the worst abusers, including North Korea and Eritrea. We’re partnering with groups that help women and children escape from the grip of their abusers. We’re helping other countries step up their own efforts. And we’re seeing results. More nations have passed and more are enforcing modern anti-trafficking laws.”

This message was the green light Eritrean youth received as enticement to leave their country. The main objective of this message was to ensure Eritrean youth vacate the country in order to deny Eritrea her defense and work force.

Unfortunately, this was a call the entire world heard. As a result, millions from the region and other parts of the world were also enticed to seek refugee claiming to be Eritreans creating massive human waves through Mediterranean to Europe and other places.

Today, Washington is using the very youth flight that they encouraged to seek indictment against the leaders of Eritrea in the International Criminal Court (ICC), claiming that the youth flight is a result of systemic repression amounting to crimes against humanity. The so called Commission of Inquiry on Human rights on Eritrea (COI) is therefore formulated to make the case.

The arms embargo is to deny Eritrea the arms necessary for self–defense. And targeting youth and the leadership is designed to takeaway Eritrea’s human resources that can defend the nation. This is yet another regime change attempt by exploiting the international court system that is specifically designed to topple African leaders not in line with western agendas.

The Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) found the bogus COI findings as an opportunity and tried to exploit and unleashed a military attack to a) to divert attention from internal pressures and, b) to demonize Eritrea.

The TPLF believed that it can create a momentum against Eritrea by claiming that Eritrea waged war to divert attention from the findings of the COI.

TPLF is DEAD

In 1991, after the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front ousted Mengistu Hailemariam, the late Meles Zenawi became the Prime Minister of Ethiopia with the help of Eritrea.

At the time, the TPLF’s main agenda was greater Tigray or Abay Tigray. Ruling Ethiopia was not part of their calculus. However, to ensure that Ethiopia remains intact Eritrean authorities pushed the TPLF to play a national role.

This development was the beginning of the end for TPLF organization for three reasons:

>> By taking over Ethiopia, the TPLF was forced to shift from an organization that fought to liberate Tigray into becoming the leadership core of Ethiopia. This move forced the TPLF to partly abandon their Tigray cause.

>> TPLF’s increasing partnership with international multinational corporations and its reliance on various business ventures that it uses to control the nation has turned the core TPLF leadership into business personalities that are distant to the cause that propelled them to power and ultimately to financial gains.

>> The above two developments have turned the TPLF organization into a business organization that all involved see as a way to gain financial advantages. Doing revolutionary work, defending a nation from the trenches and sacrificing self for greater good have lost meaning for the veteran TPLF.

As a result, the former TPLF fighters are not on the trenches in Badme and places like Tsorona. They have vacated these fields altogether and those that remain are in military leadership positions. Almost all of the Ethiopian forces are comprised of other Ethnic groups and they are not committed to the TPLF agenda.

The points above clearly show that the Tigray people’s Liberation Front is now a hollow shell that failed to fulfill its agenda. TPLF is an organization that can no longer nurture its base. Moreover, the TPLF has no national or Tigray agenda and therefore finished as an organization. It only exists in name to benefit a handful in the name of Tigray. And after the death of tyrant Meles Zenawi the identity crisis of the TPLF has reached new heights. The TPLF is increasingly loosing control and in disarray. The internal divisions are now public knowledge.

The latest propaganda of war is, therefore, a desperate attempt to deflect attention from the mounting internal pressures. To assure the international donors that the TPLF is still committed, capable and working hard to ensure the Eritrea regime change agenda on behalf of the west; to kill Eritrea’s economic developments, deter investors from coming into Eritrea and change the momentum.

The military campaign, therefore, had no national agenda behind it and as a result the blowback is killing the TPLF.

Ethiopians are condemning the aggression and signing petitions against the findings of the COI to protest against yet another international injustice on Africans. And importantly, because Ethiopians have come to conclude that the COI is ultimately designed against them. Ethiopians have seen the double standard that ignores the true crimes against humanity being perpetrated regularly by the TPLF which include genocides all over Ethiopia that the regime commits with impunity to ensure its survival.

Another important point from all these developments is the facts that in 1998-2000 when the TPLF waged war it managed to falsely garner the support of the majority of Ethiopia.

Today, the table is turned as majority of Ethiopia is working to topple the minority regime and willing to do it in partnership with Eritrea. Even the people of Tigray are arming against the TPLF, a prelude to ultimate doom.

Furthermore, the TPLF’s major investment in Ethiopia is in Oromia and with the uprising, the people of Oromia have made it clear that the TPLF can no longer loot their riches. To protect its investment the TPLF killed innocent Oromos en-mass. This has created irreparable damage. As a result Oromia is lifting arms against the TPLF.

The TPLF has done this in Gambella, Ogaden, Showa, Afar and all over Ethiopia.

The problem with this scenario is that the situation in Ethiopia is no longer predictable. If the status quo remains it will enhance the-risk for division and ultimately civil chaos. The Ogaden and Oromia can opt for Article 39 which can spiral to endless cycles of uncertainty.

Conclusion

The regime is completely disconnected from Ethiopia, from its original ideals and base. The only support it counts on is the support and alms it gets from the international community.

These are the last days of a dying regime that is ready to abandon ship with the millions they stole from the mouths of poor Ethiopian children. The TPLF looted Ethiopia in the name of Tigray and at the expense of the people in Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Eritrea and in the name of Africa.

The TPLF has failed. Today, Weyane or TPLF is enemy number ONE for Ethiopia and the region. It is therefore imperative to ensure its demise for the future of the region.

The TPLF has used the name Tigray extensively. This can pin the people of Tigray against the rest of Ethiopia. Hence, is incumbent upon the people of Tigray to see the damages that the TPLF has caused and join-in the efforts to rid Ethiopia and the region from the TPLF.

The Orma People of Kenya

The Orma are semi-nomadic herders who live in the semi-arid bushlands of south-eastern Kenya. They are the southernmost representatives of the once powerful Oromo nation of Ethiopia and Northern Kenya. They are related to the Borana and other Oromo groups.

Some Orma had moved into the Tana area by 1850. Johan Krapf, the first Protestant missionary to Kenya, came with a desire to visit the “Galla.” This older term, which refers to all the Oromo groups, is seen in some sources for the Orma.

In the late 19th century the Orma were forced by Ogaadeen (Ogaden) Somali to migrate farther south into Kenya. They are at home now along the river, from the rich delta area of the lower Tana to the drier western Tana area. They live near the river in the dry season, and move further inland to the west in the rainy season.

A group of about 15,000 called Munyoyaya or Munyo speak the Orma language and are included by some sources in the population for the Orma. The Munyoyaya are fishers. Both the Orma proper and the Munyoyaya are Muslims.

History:
Before 1500, the Oromo-speaking peoples began migrating south from the northeastern highlands of Ethiopia, spreading gradually to the area north of Mt. Kenya and down the River Tana to the coast. These were cattle and camel herders, who raided more settled peoples as they migrated or ranged through various territories. The Orma were in approximately their current settlement areas by 1900.

They have come into increasing conflict with the neighboring Pokomo people.1 The Pokomo are farmers or fishers who live along the Tana River and depend on the river and its flooding cycles for the irrigation of their crops. The Orma are herders and need access to the river to water their herds Since 2001, there have been violent clashes and revenge raids between the two ethnic communities.2 Modern weapons have increased the number of fatalities and injuries in recent years over past conflicts.3

Drought conditions are always a threat also. In 2007, some relief was felt by Kenya from the long drought that had devastated crop production and thinned cattle herds. Conflicts with the Wardei people also continued after the drought condition had improved in October 2007.

The Wardei are a small ethnic group living in part of the Tana River District where the Orma live.4 The Wardei are also mainly pastoralists and live in the drier scrublands of the region, similar to the Orma. They, like the Orma and Munyoyaya, are Muslims. On the other hand, the Pokomo are Christians and more modern and more educated.5

Women traditionally are considered less important, even though they build the houses and take them down for tansportation when the group moves inland in the rainy season. Reports on the Tana River Water Project plans and goals indicate that the main beneficiaries of the project will be the women’s groups and public institutions, like schools, clinics and churches.

A 2006 report on this project by the Kenya Water for Health Organization (KWAHO) stated that a marked change had already occured in the status and attitude toward women, as they have been empowered in various ways by the benefits brought by the water project. The report indicated that the skills gained from training by KWAHO, giving women a greater say in directing the course of their life. There is a move towards greater finaincial independence for women.

The 2006 report also indicated that progress in coordiating the water project implementation has been limited by the ethnic conflicts in the region.6

Language:
The Orma language is an Eastern Cushite language of the Oromo family. Orma is similar to Borana-Arsi-Guji (also called Borana), but not mutually intelligible. Some Western Orma also understand Borana. Nearer the coast many speak Swahili.

Customs:

Cattle are central to the Orma culture. Herding is their only means of survival; they keep goats and sheep alongside their cattle. Cattle are paid as bride price from the groom’s family. They are also slaughtered at weddings and funerals. All of life focuses on the welfare of the cattle.

Meat is the main food, supplemented with milk and blood, though now some Orma also eat maize, rice, beans and tea. The arid climate of the upper Tana region is too dry to support agriculture, so the Orma there have no vegetables in their diet.

The Orma live in round houses which consist of a wooden framework covered with woven mats and grass. The women build these houses. When people move with the herds, the house is dismantled and put on a pack animal along with the household goods. A larger version of the houses are built for people who live in permanent villages.

Special ceremonies surround the birth of children. After a woman gives birth, the baby is dedicated at 7 days of age. The woman stays secluded for a total of 40 days. There is a feast with the other women in the village and the baby is dedicated again. The ceremony ends with the women dancing.

The expectations and demands of the encroaching technological modern life has led to cultural challenges. Government leaders foster modern education for the youth. This conflicts with the pastoral and traditional expectaton of Orma children to tend the herds. The children’s lack of control over the herds in the current situation has led to further clashes with their Pokomo neighbors. It is proposed that educating Orma and Pokomo children together will build peace and future friendship.

Religion:
The Orma are 99.9% Muslim. They converted to Islam starting three or four generations ago. They observe all the rites and festivals of Islam.

Christianity:
Johan Krapf, the first Christian missionary in Kenya, came to Kenya to reach the Oromo (Galla) peoples. There has been some effort by Africa Inland Church missionaries off and on since 1960. Finally concerted efforts by AIC began around 1980. The missionaries requested help from Bible Translation and Literacy to develop literature for evangelism and discipleship as well as Bible translation. Translation is under way but no scripture portions have been produced.
