#OromoProtests started in small town of Ginchi on November 12, 2015. Within days it gripped the whole Oromia

#OromoProtests started in small town of Ginchi on November 12, 2015. The town is one of the 36 to be incorporated into Finfinne Master Plan. Within days the protest gripped the whole Oromia.

By Ali Yare (opinion from non-Oromo)

I am aware of the situation in your motherland and how Woyane’s barbaric army forces are killing the unarmed civilians because I am following what is happening there on daily basis. I know how cruel the Woyane regime is and what they are capable of doing. The Somali Ogaden people have been going through the same difficulties that you, as Oromo people, are going through now. I can feel the plights of your civilians now, the relentless horror that the women and children are facing as I am speaking to you, but whatever has happened to you or whatever lives you have lost, there is one thing you should never do and that is to heed to the military pressure. You should never stop the uprising because if you do so, it’s going to be a disaster not only to your people but also to your cause and all of what you have sacrificed so far will be useless. All the people that got killed and all the properties that got destroyed in this revolt will be futile. There are two reasons that you cannot afford to abandon your current protests and they are as the following:

  1. By far, this is the largest civil disobedience led by Oromo people that the Woyane regime or any other regime has ever faced. It is factual that this uprising has created unity among the Oromo people. It united them in one goal which is not to allow the minority groups such as Ahmara or Tigre to rule the majority such as Oromo people. Therefore, if you yield to the pressure and cease the ongoing revolution out of, either fear or intention of saving lives, you will be doomed. If you don’t seize this opportunity, this powerful uprising and the current Oromo unity may not come back to you for the next 100 years.
  1. Ahmara and Tigre believe that Oromo cannot sustain a fight for a long time and that is what they have at the back of their head. If you look at the social media, where they exchange their view points, they deeply believe that Oromo can be pacified easily through force. So, if the protest gets stopped, that will support their belief and they will definitely say “Didn’t we say so”? I know that the Oromo people are resilient when it comes to defending their lives and properties, but the Woyane regime misunderstands you because of their ignorance.

Our reliable sources are telling us that the regime is about to collapse. It is running out of finance and manpower, and we are all aware of the internal fighting among the EPRDF as well as TPLF. I don’t have to prove this to you because the situation in Addis Ababa proves itself. The weak prime minister has even been unable to form his government because of the Woyane military generals who were installed by former dictator Zenawi. All you need now is persistence and endurance against the brutal regime and your efforts will pay off. The power is the people, not the brutal regime in Addis Ababa. If the people reject the oppressed authority, the TPLF led administration, no one can shovel through their throat. Even if they kill millions of Oromo people, never allow them to impose this outdated regime upon you.

OROMO BENEFIT CONCERT – MARCH 19 – FILLMORE SILVER SPRING
(ayyaantuu.net) — Maccaaf Tuulamaa Association (MTA) comes back roaring to its humanitarian tradition. I witness this after attending the spectacular March 19, 2016 fundraising, Oromo Benefit Concert, event MTA organized in Silver Spring, MD in the vicinity of Washington DC, USA. Being a civic organization aimed at mitigating human sufferings, MTA has already reached out to victims of the heavy-handed brutality of Wayyaanee bullets on participants/suspects of the ongoing #OromoProtests in Oromia, and to compatriots who were caught-up between two fighting functions in Yemen .

According to the report, MTA reached out to individuals and Oromo Communities in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia and secured a sum of $75,000.00, out of which 80% was already directly dispersed. The contribution received also from Oromo in war-ravaged Yemen. What a dedication?

Another support structure that blends traditional Oromo responses to calamities is the sponsorship program underway by the Maccaa Tuulamaa Association. It is a situation where a member of the Maccaa Tuulamaa Association sponsors a family or an individual victim of Wayyaanee brutality on #OromoProtests. In the sponsorship program, the sponsor makes frequent communication with the victims and provide counseling and financial support as necessary. MTA has standard procedures to match sponsors and beneficiaries/victims.

The Association is run by volunteer executive members. Iftu Kebede, member of MTA, updated the attendees of the fund-raising event on accomplishments of MTA and future plans. In addition to providing details on financial sources and its destinations, Iftu also provided details on the MTA sponsorship initiative. A number of MTA sponsors provided testimony on the experience they had with those benefiting from the program.

Professor Asafa Jalata: President of MTA, explained the history of MTA and invited all attendees of the fund-raising event to become members of MTA and contribute financially, provide services and participate in sponsorship programs. Professor Asafa said that, “supporting MTA is critical and tantamount to the Oromo people”.

The event place was overcrowded. Definitely, the place was not appropriate for such large crowd. The music instrument players were so professional, the sound system was clear and the stage was well prepared. Oromo superstar artists, Haacaaluu Hundeesa, Jaambo Jootee, Abdi Nureesa and Tuujii Mudde performed unforgettable show.

Left to right: Kadir Martu (in tears), Yanet Dinqu, Shukri Jamal, Dawit Tasisa, Haachaluu and Zarihun Wadajo, March 19, 2016

The highlight of the event was the presentation of other Oromo superstars (Kadir Martuu, Shukri Jamal, Zarihun Wadajo, Yanet Dinqu and Dawit Tasisa – keyboard player) who arrived in the US on March 18, 2016. Haacaluu invited them onto the stage. The superstars made a brief speech. Zerihun said Qeerroo in Oromia has done a lot towards Bilisummaa and it is working on the last stage to the culmination of oppression in Oromia. The dramatic moment was a passionately moving speech delivered by Kadir Martuu who broke down to tears. A lot of us, in the crowd, also cried with Kadir Martu and shaded tears. It was a remarkable moment for all of us.

The performance of the Haacalu’s Maalan Jira song echoed with everyone was singing with him. All performances were very professional and world class standard.

The Shadow Over Ethiopia’s Construction Boom

  • Building glut seen fueling biggest political crisis in decade
  • Fatal land protests near capital have raged since November

(Bloomberg business) — When Ethiopian farmer Mulugeta Mezemir ceded his land three years ago to property developers on the fringes of the expanding capital, Addis Ababa, he felt he had no choice.

A gated community with white picket fences and mock Roman pillars built by Country Club Developers now occupies the fields he tilled in Legetafo, Oromia region, after the 60-year-old said local government officials convinced him to accept an offer or face expropriation. He took the cash and vacated the land, which in Ethiopia is all state-owned.

“We were sad, but we thought at the time that they were going to take the land for free,” said Mulugeta, a father of 12, while feeding hay to cattle a few meters from foundations for the next phase of housing. “We thought it was better to take whatever they were paying.”

As Ethiopia, which the International Monetary Fund estimates saw 8.7 percent economic growth in the last fiscal year, undergoes a construction boom, complaints over evictions and unfair compensation have fomented the country’s most serious domestic political crisis in a decade.

Fatal Protests

In protests by the largest ethnic group, the Oromo, that began in November, security forces allegedly shot dead as many as 266 demonstrators, according to the Kenya-based Ethiopian Human Rights Project. The government says many people died, including security officers, without giving a toll. Foreign investors including Dangote Cement Plc had property damaged.

Ethiopian Communication Minister Getachew Reda said protesters were in part angry at “some crooked officials” who have been “lining their pockets by manipulating” land deals around the capital. Property developers CCD followed legal procedures, paid standard rates of compensation and employed many members of farmers’ families, according to Tedros Messele, a member of the company’s management team.

Cases such as Mulugeta’s have been a growing trend on the outskirts of the capital over the past two decades, said Nemera Mamo, an economist at Sussex University in England. No recent, independent studies have been conducted into how many people have been affected.

‘Beggars, Laborers’

“The booming construction industry has contributed to Addis Ababa’s rapid expansion that’s dispossessed many poor farmers and turned them into beggars and daily laborers,” Nemera said. “The Oromo protest movement opposes the mass eviction of poor farmers.”

Ethiopia’s state-heavy model seeks to industrialize the impoverished nation within a decade by improving infrastructure and combining investment with cheap labor, land and water to produce higher-value goods. Projects for what the IMF calls African’s fastest-growing economy include the continent’s largest hydropower dam, railways and the building of 700,000 low-cost apartments by 2020.

Construction accounted for more than half of all industry in the fiscal year that ended in July after it grew an annual 37 percent, according to National Bank of Ethiopia data. Industry comprised 15 percent of output.

Domestic Supply

Investors such as Diageo Plc, the world’s largest liquor maker, and Unilever Plc are tapping into the expansion by building Ethiopian facilities. Citizens of Africa’s second-most populous nation are using money earned there or abroad to build residences, malls and offices.

The ruling party hasn’t kept pace with the boom by improving governance and the ability of domestic manufacturers to supply the industry, said Tsedeke Yihune, who owns Flintstone Engineering, an Ethiopian contractor that’s built upmarket housing and African Union offices.

“Construction has not been used as it was supposed to, as a means of building domestic capacity, building good governance, as well as delivering the government’s development agenda,” Tsedeke said in an interview in the capital.

More than 70 percent of construction materials are imported, including cables, steel, ceramics, locks, furniture and electrical fittings, Tsedeke said. Ethiopia’s trade deficit increased by $3 billion to $14.5 billion last fiscal year.

Government Spending

Addis Ababa-based Orchid Business Group is another recipient of government capital spending, which the IMF says could double to almost $15 billion a year by 2020. Orchid’s projects include one with Italy’s Salini Impregilo SpA building the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, said Hailealem Worku, the construction and engineering head.

Cement plants built by companies including Dangote have made Ethiopia self-sufficient in the material, while manufacturing incentives means glass, paint and steel factories will play a bigger role soon, Hailealem said.

The government wants to improve regulations and change attitudes so contractors boost their skills and ethics, Construction Minister Ambachew Mekonnen said in an interview. “The construction industry suffers from a lack of good governance,” he said.

In Legetafo, Mulugeta was paid 17 birr ($0.80) a square meter in compensation. Meanwhile, people were bidding as much as 355,555 birr per meter to rent land in Addis Ababa last year. Mulugeta used the 200,000 birr he received for the plot for expenses including renting more farmland. Two of his children now work as CCD cleaners, earning 40 birr a day.

“We are getting deeper into poverty,” he said.

TPLF fascists have been biting the hands of the Oromo people that fed them for the last 25 years

$

Olaanaa Saboonaa irraa

hqdefault

The peaceful resistance of the Oromo people has to be accompanied by a civil armed (guerrilla) resistance movement.

  • The tigryan fascists and their stooges should not be allowed to continue murdering Oromo youth, women and the elderly with impunity.
  • These fascists have still the audacity to rule over the Oromo people and the rest of the Ethiopian people after having murdered hundreds of innocent Oromos, after having maimed, imprisoned tortured and expelled thousands of innocent citizens from their homeland.
  • The resistance movement using various cells formed by trained Oromo fighters must keep on punishing those who have ordered the occupation and genocide against the Oromo people including the TPLF fascist leaders and their stooges residing and operating from Finfinee and all over Oromia.
  • The generals that are leading the massacre of the Oromo people in their so called 8 districts and all that take part in this genocidal activities are legitimate targets of Oromo people’s self defense.
  • We must all know that what these fascists rely on is mainly the weapons that they are armed with. Oromo guerrilla resistance movement should learn from the heroic fights of our forefathers against the Italian fascists. Disarming each of their killers, raiding their garrisons to arm the Oromo fighters, raiding each of their fascist prison camps and freeing Oromo prisoners and demoralizing the enemy in every corner, and supporting all resistance movements all over Ethiopia is one of the key ways to expedite the downfall of these inhumane murderers.
  • Working on their secret service and their army is an important thing to persistently work on. Being able to make the army turn its weapons against these fascists is something that should be worked on.
    • Distributing various pamphlets among the army members with a warning can help at least some of them understand what is going on.
    • The key issue here is to let the army know that they are not paid with the money from the TPLF fascists as they try to make them think. We must let them know that they are paid with the money collected from the people through tax and various other means. Hence, they should think twice before executing the order to murder and maim the innocent people that pay them. The warning should be explicit in that if they do not listen to this and continue executing the bids of the few TPLF fascists and their stooges, they will be doomed to face their end on Oromo’s soil.
  • The Tigryans, with the help of their western and lately with their Chinese handlers have come thousands of kilometers to invade, loot and expropriate the Oromo land.
    • They came on bare feet and are now millionaires and billionaires with the courage to build mansions with the replica of Axum’s obelisk in their backyard in Finfinee while millions are starving
  • If the TPLF fascists think that they will rule the Oromo people under their martial law for ever, they must understand that they are expediting their end.
    • When one follows the history of what they did over the last 25 years in Oromia, one can conclude that they have also been preparing for this kind of doomsday scenario.
    • From the very beginning when they landed their feet on Oromo land, they have been working on disarming the Oromo people.
    • There were even times when they declared that no Oromo can have their traditional sticks (ulee or menchaa) coming to the market. What is left to do for them was to only prohibit all Oromo families to not even have knives to use when they cook their dishes. This has shown the extent to which the tigryans have paranoia for Oromo gallantry and heroism and the extent to which they fear an armed Oromo. It seems that they have learnt how strong and heroic the Oromo people are, not only from just history but also from the heroism of the Raya and Azebo Oromos in their backyard.
    • That is also why they have been running around like mad dogs for the last 25 years to make sure that Oromos do not have any base and support from any neighboring country to arm themselves and conduct an effective armed resistance
  • Now that the new generation and the whole Oromo people are up in arms with the system, things have changed. Disarming the fascists and turning their weapons against them will be a major means to wage an effective armed resistance movement besides any kind of peaceful resistance to end their tyranny.

Oromo land will be the immediate burial soil for those who have come to murder our children. Tigryan fascists and those who conduct their bids will face the gallantry and heroism of the great Oromo nation in armed battles beginning from Finfinee to all corners of Oromia. This battle will not happen at the time of their choice but at the choice of our gallant underground (guerrilla) freedom fighters.

Let us support those who are giving their precious lives for our freedom!!

UK (Natural History Museum) — A team of scientists led by Museum researchers have identified and named a new species of viper, Bitis harenna, that lives in Ethiopia’s Bale Mountains National Park.

These snakes are mostly black with narrow pale markings, and they are thought to grow to about a metre in length.

All other species of Bitis have potent venom, making it likely that this newly discovered species is capable of giving a lethal bite to their prey or in defence.

A single sighting

Museum zoologist Dr David Gower, who led the study, says: ‘As far as we know, biologists have only once seen this snake in the wild.

‘It is not yet clear whether the species is extremely rare, or is simply secretive and rarely encountered. The only photos were taken as it was disappearing into the undergrowth – at the time, the team that chanced upon it didn’t realise it was such an important sighting.’

The new viper species was seen in the Harenna Forest, which lies on steep slopes in the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia

The study, published today in the journal Zootaxa, involved researchers from the UK, Germany and USA. They have previously worked closely with Ethiopian colleagues, logging hundreds of hours of fieldwork studying the reptiles and amphibians of the Bale Mountains.

Despite the many hours the team have spent searching the area, both at night and during the day, the new species is known only from a single museum specimen, which was collected in the late 1960s.

Until the latest research, this specimen was thought to be an unusually patterned example of Bitis parviocula, a similar Ethiopian viper.

The sighting of the snake in the wild, in 2013, prompted the team of scientists to re-examine the historical museum specimen.

Scientists used a micro-CT scanner to examine and make a 3D reconstruction of the skull of the only known Bitis harenna specimen

Micro-CT scanning carried out in the Museum’s Imaging and Analysis Centre revealed details of the skull that enabled the team to confirm the viper as a separate species.

It is distinguished by its unique colour patterns, the structure of its skull, and differences in its head proportions and number of scales.

A threatened habitat

The new species is named Bitis harenna after the Harenna Forest, the part of the Bale Mountains National Park where it was observed.

This globally important National Park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to many species that are found nowhere else on the planet. It is also known as the last remaining stronghold of the Ethiopian wolf.

Sadly, the habitats of the Harenna Forest and other parts of the Bale Mountains National Park are under threat from cattle grazing and deforestation, with serious repercussions for the wildlife living there.

Parts of the Harenna Forest have been cleared for cattle and housing

In another recent study, also led by Museum researchers, four frog groups unique to the region were discovered to have plummeted in number.

Dr Gower says, ‘The discovery of the new viper further highlights the importance of protecting the natural environment in Ethiopia’s Bale Mountains.’

Unlike the elusive new species, Bitis parviocula is traded as a pet in Europe and North America. But it is also still poorly understood, with only three museum specimens known worldwide.

Dr Gower concludes, ‘Much more research is needed to locate populations of Bitis harenna and to learn about the biology of these two viper species.’

An unrelenting drought has gripped millions of lives in Ethiopia

(Rescue) — When the rains didn’t arrive in the southwest of Ethiopia, villagers like Meheuba Shifa were forced to walk 12 hours in a desperate search for water.

“It has been a miserable time,” says Meheuba, 23. “I even lost my donkey while looking for water. It was an especially heavy burden as my three children are not old enough to help me.”

Ethiopia has suffered recurrent drought for decades, but this year may be the worst in half a century, affecting more than 10 million people.

“Ethiopia will need emergency aid through all of 2016,” says Lina Gjerstad, the International Rescue Committee’s senior program coordinator in the country. “We’ve already missed two planting seasons in 2015; there is no way farmers will be able to produce enough food in time to recover.”

The Ethiopian government is leading the response to the drought, working with United Nations agencies and international aid organizations, including the IRC. But more funding is needed to reach the millions in need—an appeal for $1.4 billion has fallen short by half.

The IRC is responding by delivering clean water and helping to establish adequate sanitation and access to health care. Still, malnutrition is on the rise and everywhere children must forego school to join the often futile search for water.

For example, 13-year-old Abdil Badel Bade from Fedha’a should have been in class, enjoying his favorite subject, English. But finding water had become a daylong chore, and Abdil was forced to walk as much as six hours daily to collect water for his family.

“I used to leave at 7am to look for water,” he says. “After lunchtime, when I came back, I was very tired and couldn’t go to the school.”

Using satellite imagery, IRC geologists have been able to drill a new, deep well near Abdil’s home that feeds two water points and a drinking trough for livestock.

With water closer to his home, Abdi is now free to do what he loves most—study. “I want to finish my schooling and be educated,” he says. “I want to be a teacher.”

Traditionally, women fetch water and it’s never an easy task. Many carry heavy plastic containers on their backs over long distances, and it is not uncommon for pregnant women to go into labor while searching for water. Even when women give birth in health centers, the lack of clean water makes deliveries dangerously unsanitary.

The IRC has rehabilitated the pump system in Mehuba’s village as well. The equipment had been in disrepair for some time; the pump now brings up ground water in 12 minutes—an improvement over 12-hour walks.

Mehuba and her family no longer must settle for a few discolored liters dredged from shallow, polluted ponds…a small glimmer of hope amid the unrelenting drought.

160316132633-02-ethiopia-louisa-seton-super-169

(CNN) — Kenyan-raised, Sydney-based photographer Louisa Seton undertook an epic journey into Ethiopia’s remote Upper Omo Valley to capture the traditions of the Surma people — before they’re lost.

After dealing with local militia and being stranded on the Omo River, Seton now has a series of stunning images to tell her tale of survival and exploration.

CNN: What’s the inspiration behind your African photography?

Seton: I grew up in Kenya, so I’ve got an affinity with Africa.

When I was a child I used to fly around Kenya with my father, a pilot, in a light aircraft and see all these incredible tribal people.

Every time I went back to Kenya, I’d go into the bush and seek out different tribal groups in order to do portraits.

What are you aiming to capture?

A lot of people photograph Africa in such a negative light, with wars and famine and struggle.

But I wanted to show the beauty of these incredible, strong and very proud people — the way they have an affinity with the land and the seasons.

"The children are always the easiest to photograph as they love to touch, laugh and joke with me, says Seton. "These children were fascinated with my long blond hair and loved to touch it."

Why did you take this trip to Ethiopia?

I’d heard about the tribal groups that live in the Upper Omo Valley.

And I’d heard about the Gibe III Dam that’s being built to provide electricity — but with that comes displacement of tribal people.

A lot of these different groups could, in time, slowly lose their traditions.

What was the target of your lens?

I really wanted to photograph the Suri tribe and the Mursi tribe — collectively called the Surma tribes.

In particular, the lip plates they wear are fascinating.

When women become of marrying age, about 14, they get their lower teeth knocked out with a rock.

Then they cut the lower lip with a razor and stretch the lip with a wooden plug — then with a bigger one, and a bigger one.

Eventually it stretches so much they fit a clay plate around the lip. It’s a form of beauty and status for these women, and the bigger the lip plate the higher the dowry.

omo

How did you travel to the Upper Omo Valley?

I flew from Nairobi to Addis Ababa and met a guide and driver who were referred to me by another photographer.

From there it’s a three-day drive — eight hours a day — by four-wheel drive to get to Kibish, near the South Sudanese border.

The Upper Omo is very remote and very hard to get to; there are more tourists in the Lower Omo.

The only people interested in going there are anthropologists or photographers.

Was it safe?

It wasn’t safe photographing the Suri tribe near Kibish. They all carry AK-47s and they’re a lot more aggressive than tribal groups in the Lower Omo Valley.

When we left, our vehicle got stuck on a track in the middle of the bush.

We had torrential rain and we dug for eight hours trying to get it out of the mud.

130603071537-ethiopia-acid-pools-medium-plus-169Eventually, my guide and I walked around for help while the driver stayed.

I had to leave with just the clothes on my back. I had to abandon all my equipment and the vehicle, everything, and just walk in the bush until a lorry managed to get us to Kangatan, a one-horse town on the Omo River, where I ended up staying in a shebeen brothel.

Eventually, three days later, we heard that the driver had managed to get out and go back to Kibish. We hitched a lorry to Jinka — that’s where our driver found us.

Then I photographed the Mursi tribe that live in the Mago National Park.

Did you have to pay the tribespeople to photograph them?

I was paying about a couple of dollars per person to take the photos.

They work in cliques.

People get aggressive and argue over money, and I was trying to create a studio in the bush — it was all a bit stressful.

There’s a lot of money involved — not quite that romantic idea where you can just cruise into a village and take photos.

How did you stage the shots?

I’d gather a group and have two guys hold up a white cloth to create a studio backdrop.

I had a Canon 5D Mark lll, and three lenses — a 100mm fixed lens for my portraits.

In Africa, you get that hard, harsh light and shadows, so you have to shoot in the beautiful, soft, early morning light.

I like to shoot in black and white, as when I studied photography, we were only allowed to shoot in color after we mastered black and white. It really taught me to see in black and white.

‘Odyssey’ by Louisa Seton exhibits at Studio 124, Mosman Park, Perth, from April 7-30. A catalog of images can be viewed online and purchased at Louisaseton.com.au.

ADAMA, Ethiopia (Foreign Policy) — For those who would speak frankly about politics in this landlocked East African country, the first challenge is to find a safe space.

But on a recent evening in Adama, a city in the heart of a region reeling from the largest protest movement Ethiopia has faced in decades, most people seemed at ease. University students poured out of the city’s main campus, spilling into claustrophobic bars and pool halls. Others crowded around a cluster of aging taxis, jostling for a quick ride home.

Though it is one of the largest cities in Oromia — where members of Ethiopia’s Oromo ethnic group have taken to the streets in recent months in unprecedented numbers to protest their political and economic marginalization — Adama has remained mostly quiet.

Hidden beneath the casual veneer of daily life, however, lurks a deep-seated suspicion of the government, which has built a massive surveillance apparatus and cracked down violently on its opponents.

Hidden beneath the casual veneer of daily life, however, lurks a deep-seated suspicion of the government, which has built a massive surveillance apparatus and cracked down violently on its opponents.

Citizens feel they have to watch what they say, and where they say it. At the hangouts where crowds have gathered, a political statement might be overheard. Out on the sidewalks, government spies could be on patrol. Inside the university campus, security officials are on the lookout for suspicious behavior.

In a way, the recent unrest is rooted in Ethiopia’s rapid economic rise. The federal government claims to have notched double-digit GDP growth rates over the past decade, but its rigid, top-down approach to developing industry, and attracting foreign investment, has resulted in mass displacement and disrupted millions of lives. This, in turn, has heightened ethnic tensions that today threaten Ethiopia’s reputation for stability.

All across Oromia, government security forces have been struggling to control the spate of violent protests that erupted in November, partly in response to the government’s so-called master plan to coordinate development in Addis Ababa with nearby towns in Oromia, a sprawling central region that surrounds the capital on all sides. Like much of the country, the vast majority of Oromia is rural, home to small-scale farmers who feel left behind by the dazzling growth of Addis.

When this latest round of protests began last year, demonstrators seized on the master plan as symbolic of broader encroachments on Oromo autonomy. They also accused the government of taking land from Oromo farmers for little or no compensation, suppressing the Oromo language in schools, and unfairly redistributing the region’s natural resources.

In Adama, a 23-year-old engineering student, whose full name has been withheld for his safety, was initially reluctant to speak with this reporter for fear of reprisal. He relaxed only after he and some close friends sat down in a deserted cafe near campus, where a quiet woman brewing coffee over hot coals was the only person listening in.

“There are so many problems facing the Oromo people,” he said. “But those who speak about it are getting arrested. Educated people, farmers, teachers, doctors — the government accuses them all of being part of the protests.”

His caution was warranted. Less than two weeks later, a confrontation erupted at the university, reportedly in response to a small demonstration by students — though the details, as always, are hazy. One witness who asked not be named said he heard gunshots as security forces descended on the campus. Amid the confusion, at least two fires were sparked — one in the school’s backup generator.

“On campus, students already feared the armed forces,” said the witness, who is a student at the university. “Now, no one feels like they have any right to speak at all.”

Government security forces have been accused of exacerbating the crisis in Oromia by violently suppressing the protests. In a recent report, Human Rights Watch said it had “documented security forces firing into crowds of protesters with little or no warning, the arrests of students as young as 8, and the torture of protesters in detention.” The rights group said military and police forces have killed “several hundred peaceful protesters” since November.

Members of the Ethiopian diaspora have been equally vocal, taking to social media to call attention to alleged atrocities. Jawar Mohammed, who is based in Minnesota, is perhaps the most prominent online activist, manning a number of social media feeds featuring bloody photos of dead demonstrators and grainy videos of police brutality that have become hubs for Oromo diaspora members around the world. His Facebook page has amassed nearly a half million followers.

“We have freelancers embedded in pretty much every district across the country,” said Mohammed, who was born in Ethiopia but works abroad as the executive director of the Oromia Media Network, a news broadcaster whose satellite feed here has been repeatedly jammed by the Ethiopian government. “They infiltrate the system from top to bottom,” he said in a Skype interview.

How much of an impact social media activism has had on the actual protest movement is a matter of debate. In a country with limited Internet penetration, and where the sole government-owned telecommunications provider has the power to shut down signals and block opposition websites, online activists like Mohammed are necessarily limited in what they can do. According to the engineering student in Adama, people on the ground are driving the protests, and social media matters “only a little bit.”

Where online activists have succeeded is in channeling video and photographic evidence of abuses to the outside word. But even this evidence is difficult to verify; several journalists, including this correspondent, have been detained by officials for attempting to report in some of the worst-affected areas.

Where online activists have succeeded is in channeling video and photographic evidence of abuses to the outside word. But even this evidence is difficult to verify; several journalists, including this correspondent, have been detained by officials for attempting to report in some of the worst-affected areas.

There are also questions about the direction social media activists have steered the debate surrounding the protests. Comments by Mohammed’s passionate social media followers sometimes advocate violence against members of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a political party from the northern region of Tigray that dominates the government’s security and intelligence agencies. And because he and other online activists are far from the front lines, some argue that their social media posts are ultimately a distraction. The student who witnessed the altercation at the university in Adama, for instance, said he agrees with Mohammed’s political analysis, but is concerned that the Facebook page has become a magnet for a dizzying array of viewpoints — about religion, regional politics, and ethnic strife — that make the movement more controversial than it needs to be.

Still, Mohammed has a clear strategy in mind. When it comes to human life, he advocates nonviolence. But he encourages demonstrators to block trade routes, destroy the property of companies that are seen as operating against Oromo interests, and avoid bringing crops to market in order to raise food prices.

Might such tactics be unethical during the worst drought Ethiopia has witnessed in decades, which has left 10.2 million people in need of emergency food aid? “Morally, yes,” Mohammed said. “Strategically, no.”

Officials have no time for these “activists on the other side of the Atlantic,” said government spokesman Getachew Reda. He claimed that agitators, some of whom have backing from Eritrea, Ethiopia’s archrival, have infiltrated the ranks of the protesters and are responsible for the current violence. The government security forces, by contrast, have generally handled the situation professionally, he said.

“We may have some bad apples,” Reda said. “Otherwise, the security apparatus that we have in this country is very much oriented towards serving the interests of the public.”

Amid this war of words, normal citizens are caught in the middle. In the quiet café in Adama, the engineering student spelled out a set of remarkably prosaic demands: He would like to see more Oromo professors at the university, for instance, and a fairer allocation of resources for the region. But, he said, he stays quiet for fear of Ethiopia’s pervasive security and intelligence apparatus.

“People don’t feel free,” he said. “We are all psychologically impacted.”

After two months of violent demonstrations, the government announced that it was scrapping the master plan. It wasn’t enough. Some protesters said they didn’t believe it had really been canceled. Others were motivated by grievances that run much deeper than any development scheme, citing marginalization stretching all the way back to the late 1800s, when the Ethiopian emperor Menelik II swept in from the north to expand Ethiopia’s borders and establish the capital city in Oromo lands.

On paper, today’s federal system is meant to ensure some measure of autonomy for all of the country’s ethnic groups, including the Oromos. The ruling coalition, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), is made up of four regional parties, including the TPLF and the Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO). But the government lost some credibility in May, when the EPRDF and allied parties won every parliamentary seat in a national election. Though the OPDO holds more parliamentary seats than any other party, protesters say the party either cannot or will not challenge the dominance of the TPLF — and Oromos remain marginalized as a result.

Officials say they are trying to promote meaningful dialogue. “It is the government’s responsibility to make sure that people’s legitimate grievances are addressed properly,” Reda said. To that end, OPDO officials have convened meetings with concerned citizens across Oromia, and hundreds of low-level officials have been dismissed for corruption.

But the government has continued to lean on its powerful security apparatus, which has both enabled Ethiopia’s impressive, state-led economic development and imperiled it by bringing ethnic tensions to the fore. The ongoing protests in Oromia point to cracks in the facade, where citizens feel left out as the government pursues its uncompromising vision of modernization.

By continuing to crack down on demonstrators instead of listening to their demands, Ethiopia risks compromising the reputation for political stability that fueled its unprecedented decade of growth and foreign investment. In that way, the government may soon erode the very foundation of its own economic ambitions.

Kenya and Ethiopia: Damn built by Italian giant Salini reported to OECD

Nyangatom herders lead their cattle to the Omo River to drink. With Gibe III Dam holding back the river’s water, grasses for livestock grazing and soil moisture for crop production have diminished downstream for the indigenous tribal communities, spreading hunger in the lower Omo Valley. (CTA) – An Italian engineering company has been reported to the OECD because the dam it is building is set to destroy the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people in Kenya and Ethiopia. Survival International (SI)‚ a global movement for the rights of tribal peoples‚ reported engineering giant Salini to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development over the construction of the dam‚ which has cut off the Omo River’s regular flooding‚ which 100‚000 people rely on to water their crops and livestock. According to a statement released by SI‚ a further 100‚000 people rely on the flooding more indirectly. SI said the dam could mean that Lake Turkana – the world’s largest desert lake – would be drained‚ spelling disaster for the 300‚000 people. SI said Salini “did not seek the consent of local people before building the dam‚ but claimed that an ‘artificial flood release’ would compensate them for their losses. However‚ this promised flood never came.” According to SI‚ “The region is one of the most important sites in early human evolution‚ and an area of exceptional biodiversity‚ with two World Heritage Sites and five national parks. The head of Kenya’s conservation agency said last week that the dam is unleashing ‘one of the worst environmental disasters you can imagine’.”

The project is located approximately 300 km south west of the capital Addis Ababa. The works consist of the design and construction of a Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam and an open-air power plant with 10 Francis turbines with a total installed power of 1,870 MW and an expected energy output of 6,500 GWh per year. The project also involves three diversion tunnels and two twin pumping tunnels, two intake structures, two horizontal tunnels, four vertical wells and two distributors.
