Another historical protest in Bahir Dar city of Ethiopia. Protesters chanted anti-government slogans. The regime forces fired live bullets into the crowd for no reason, many casualties are reported. In response of the soldiers brutality protesters also burned/damaged properties owned by authorities.

(FT) — Scores of people were arrested in Ethiopia on Saturday in a wave of anti-government protests that rocked the capital Addis Ababa and dozens of other towns in the restless region of Oromia.

Images posted on social media showed huge demonstrations in the capital and other cities. Activists said the protests could mark a possible turning point in the nine month campaign against the government.

“The dynamic had shifted and people are now calling for the downfall of the government,” said Jawar Mohammed, who runs the Oromo Media Network in the US state of Minnesota and said he was in regular contact with protesters in multiple cities. “This is by far the biggest demonstration that Ethiopia has seen in terms of size and co-ordination across Oromia.”

Fisseha Tekle, an Amnesty International researcher who is based in Kenya, said the police and the army were using live bullets to disperse the protesters.

The demonstrations were sparked last November in protest against a move to extend the municipal boundaries of Addis Ababa into Oromia, which straddles much of the centre and south of the country and includes the capital. But they have grown in intensity in response to a fierce government crackdown.

The Oromo make up about 40 per cent of Ethiopia’s 90m people but they believe they are marginalised by the Tigrayan ethnic group, which dominates federal institutions despite comprising only about 6 per cent of the population.

In a report released in June, Human Rights Watch said that at least 400 people had been killed and thousands more injured since the protests began.

However, Ethiopia’s communications minister Getachew Reda said that Saturday’s protests were “illegal” and that “scores” of people had been arrested in the restless region.

Mr Reda denied suggestions that security personnel had used live gunfire, but said armed protesters were “trying to arm-twist the security forces into shooting” and “destroying private and public property.”

Independent efforts to reach protesters in Ethiopia were unsuccessful. The Ethiopian government has severely restricted access to the internet and social media in the Oromia region, making it hard to verify reports of protests.

But images showing bloodied bodies of protesters were circulated on social media using the hashtag #oromoprotests.

A massive demonstration was held in Gondar last Sunday, a city in the northern region of Amhara, to express solidarity with the Oromo and to express other grievances. It was the first time a major protest had broken out in another part of the country.

The need for paradigm shift – To allow the ongoing slaughter of our people in the name of peaceful struggle can result in a full fledged genocide and loss of the victories they have so far achieved

This is a note to update the following article that was posted few months ago. This article is reposted as a reminder that we have to seriously work on organizing a civil defense force of our people if we want us to survive as a nation. The TPLF fascists have confirmed time and again that they have come to dispossess us of our land, our culture and heritage by committing genocide in a manner that is confirmed to be worse than what the Italian fascists did.

We just saw the response of this TPLF animals to the peaceful demonstrations held all over Oromia and Gonder. As it stands, they still believe that they can suppress the will of the people by killing innocent children, women, the young and the elderly.

It is incumbent upon us to encourage our people to be organized just like they did to fight the Italian invaders. The TPLF fascists came as colonizers to occupy land that does not belong to them as the Italian fascists did. They have done this not only to the Oromo people but also to the people of Walqait Gonder and Amhara in general, Gambela, Konso, Afar, Ogaden and to the Southern peoples and nations.

The Oromo nation has to build on the solidarity it has managed to create with the People of Gonder (Amhara) and make the whole Ethiopian empire the burial place of the TPLFites.

For this to happen, we cannot only insist on pursuing a peaceful means of struggle among uncivilized beasts that do not understand what peaceful means of struggle is. We have to arm our people and allow them to defend themselves to prevent ultimate genocide to which the TPLF and its generals are heading.

One best way of arming oneself as indicated in the following article is by taking away arms from their soldiers and their garrisons. Oromo civil defense system should as quickly as possible evolve into a guerrilla style warfare. The guerrilla style that Oromo people and the other people of Ethiopia wage against the TPLF will be legitimate as it is conducted in self defense against genocide committed by the TPLF Agazi forces whose name sounds like Graziani forces.

It is also important to reiterate that the Oromo people and all other oppressed people of Ethiopia need to send a clear message to the Ethiopian defense, security and police forces. These forces have to know that they are taking part in the genocide of their own people and that they are killing the people that pay them through tax and various other means.

We need to make our struggle all encompassing by creating more solidarity with other peoples of Ethiopia, guarding our victories, and getting ready to defend our nation and show that we can be reliable partners to other nations and nationalities in that cursed empire and in East Africa in general. This will never be achieved by peaceful means alone. Peaceful means of struggle has to be accompanied by a force that can at least protect the gains achieved. If this is not the case, we are just preparing our people for another cycle of brutal suppression and struggle.

The following is an article posted in the past

TPLF FASCISTS HAVE BEEN BITING THE HANDS OF THE OROMO PEOPLE THAT FED THEM FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS

The peaceful resistance of the Oromo people has to be accompanied by a civil armed (guerrilla) resistance movement.

  • The tigryan fascists and their stooges should not be allowed to continue murdering Oromo youth, women and the elderly with impunity.
  • These fascists have still the audacity to rule over the Oromo people and the rest of the Ethiopian people after having murdered hundreds of innocent Oromos, after having maimed, imprisoned tortured and expelled thousands of innocent citizens from their homeland.
  • The resistance movement using various cells formed by trained Oromo fighters must keep on punishing those who have ordered the occupation and genocide against the Oromo people including the TPLF fascist leaders and their stooges residing and operating from Finfinee and all over Oromia.
  • The generals that are leading the massacre of the Oromo people in their so called 8 districts and all that take part in this genocidal activities are legitimate targets of Oromo people’s self defense.
  • We must all know that what these fascists rely on is mainly the weapons that they are armed with. Oromo guerrilla resistance movement should learn from the heroic fights of our forefathers against the Italian fascists. Disarming each of their killers, raiding their garrisons to arm the Oromo fighters, raiding each of their fascist prison camps and freeing Oromo prisoners and demoralizing the enemy in every corner, and supporting all resistance movements all over Ethiopia is one of the key ways to expedite the downfall of these inhumane murderers.
  • Working on their secret service and their army is an important thing to persistently work on. Being able to make the army turn its weapons against these fascists is something that should be worked on.
    • Distributing various pamphlets among the army members with a warning can help at least some of them understand what is going on.
    • The key issue here is to let the army know that they are not paid with the money from the TPLF fascists as they try to make them think. We must let them know that they are paid with the money collected from the people through tax and various other means. Hence, they should think twice before executing the order to murder and maim the innocent people that pay them. The warning should be explicit in that if they do not listen to this and continue executing the bids of the few TPLF fascists and their stooges, they will be doomed to face their end on Oromo’s soil.
  • The Tigryans, with the help of their western and lately with their Chinese handlers have come thousands of kilometers to invade loot and expropriate the Oromo land.
    • They came on bare feet and are now millionaires and billionaires with the courage to build mansions with the replica of Axum’s obelisk in their backyard in Finfinee while millions are starving
  • If the TPLF fascists think that they will rule the Oromo people under their martial law for ever, they must understand that they are expediting their end.
    • When one follows the history of what they did over the last 25 years in Oromia, one can conclude that they have also been preparing for this kind of doomsday scenario.
    • From the very beginning when they landed their feet on Oromo land, they have been working on disarming the Oromo people.
    • There were even times when they declared that no Oromo can have their traditional sticks (ulee or menchaa) coming to the market. What is left to do for them was to only prohibit all Oromo families to not even have knives to use when they cook their dishes. This has shown the extent to which the tigryans have paranoia for Oromo gallantry and heroism and the extent to which they fear an armed Oromo. It seems that they have learnt how strong and heroic the Oromo people are, not only from just history but also from the heroism of the Raya and Azebo Oromos in their backyard.
    • That is also why they have been running around like mad dogs for the last 25 years to make sure that Oromos do not have any base and support from any neighboring country to arm themselves and conduct an effective armed resistance
  • Now that the new generation and the whole Oromo people are up in arms with the system, things have changed. Disarming the fascists and turning their weapons against them will be a major means to wage an effective armed resistance movement besides any kind of peaceful resistance to end their tyranny.

OROMO LAND WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE BURIAL SOIL FOR THOSE WHO HAVE COME TO MURDER OUR CHILDREN. TIGRYAN FASCISTS AND THOSE WHO CONDUCT THEIR BIDS WILL FACE THE GALLANTRY AND HEROISM OF THE GREAT OROMO NATION IN ARMED BATTLES BEGINNING FROM FINFINEE TO ALL CORNERS OF OROMIA. THIS BATTLE WILL NOT HAPPEN AT THE TIME OF THEIR CHOICE BUT AT THE CHOICE OF OUR GALLANT UNDERGROUND (GUERRILLA) FREEDOM FIGHTERS.

LET US SUPPORT THOSE WHO ARE GIVING THEIR PRECIOUS LIVES FOR OUR FREEDOM!!

(BBC) — Several people are feared dead in clashes in north-western Ethiopia between police and anti-government protesters, amid a wave of unrest.

On Friday police arrested dozens of demonstrators during massive rallies in the capital, Addis Ababa.

Since last November the government has been facing protests from the two largest ethnic communities over alleged human rights abuses and other issues.

Rallies have continued across Ethiopia despite a protest ban announced on Friday

Rallies have continued across Ethiopia despite a protest ban announced on Friday

Authorities have banned demonstrations and blocked social media.

Despite the ban, people took to the streets in several parts of the country for a third consecutive day on Sunday, Emmanuel Igunza reports from Addis Ababa.

The worst violence took place in the north-western city of Bahir Dar in the Amhara region – the homeland of the Amhara people.

Police used tear gas and fired in the air to disperse thousands of people who had blocked roads and chanted anti-government slogans.

Unconfirmed reports say several people were killed. One resident told the BBC he had seen a friend being shot in the head by security forces.

The Oromo protests and Ethiopian unity

Overnight protests continued in the Oromia region, which surrounds Addis Ababa, with police arresting dozens of people.

The unrest was sparked last November by a plan to expand the capital into Oromia. This led to fears farmers from the Oromo ethnic group, the largest in Ethiopia, would be displaced.

The plan was later dropped but protests continued, highlighting issues such as marginalisation and human rights.

Oromo activists say police have killed hundreds and arrested thousands of people from their community in recent months.

The long Oromo nation’s protest against the TPLF/EPRDF- led dictatorial government,  which has been going on for the past  eight  months, expanded its scope  on August 6, 2016 when over 190  Oromia towns including the capital city of Addis Ababa participated  in presenting their grievances and  demanding their fundamental human rights.

In this region- wide August 6 protest , in which for the first time the residents of the capital city participated, over 70 Oromos were recklessly brutalized and beaten and  over 800-1000  Oromos were taken to prison according to the HRLHA informants  in Oromia Regional State.

During the eighth round of the protest on August 6, 2016  the most devastated zones of Oromia were Awaday and Haromaya in East Hararge,  Asasa in  West Arsi , Dodola and Robe in Bale,  Ambo  and Walso in  West Showa, and  Naqamte in East Walaga  among others.

Since the protest started in November 2015, the government of Ethiopia has mercilessly killed over 670 Oromos and detained over 50,000. Among the dead, the majority are university and high school students, young children, pregnant women, and seniors. The killing squad Agazi force killed people not only on the streets, but in their homes  during the night time by breaking down their doors. Many people were taken from their homes and arrested, then taken to police stations, military camps and concentration camps.

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA)  and other human rights organizations have widely reported on the protests in Oromia in order to  make the world community aware of the real scope of the protests.

However, the world communities have chosen to remain silent and a few government agencies have responded to the horrific human rights crisis in Oromia Regional State.

It was in such circumstances and with outcries from human rights organizations that Ethiopia was elected  on June 28, 2016[4] to a UN Security Council member  seat ” one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, responsible for the maintenance of International Peace”. The HRLHA expressed its disappointment at this election to the president of the UN General Assembly in its appeal on July 4, 2016 THE ETHIOPIAN GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE REWARDED FOR MASSACRING ITS PEOPLE”[5]
From 2011 to the present, Ethiopia has been a member of the UN human rights council[6] with the responsibility of protecting and promoting human rights globally.

Backgrounds of the Oromo grievances:

Since the TPLF/EPRDF government came to power in 1991, several documents have been created, including the 1995 Constitution. These documents, however, are designed only for show, to make the government look good to foreign eyes. Here is the truth:

  • From day one when the TPLF/EPRDF assumed power, the Tigrigna People Liberation Front (TPLF) members have focused on diminishing the political capability of the nations and nationalities of Ethiopia, groups that the government regards as its political  opponents.
  •  The TPLF created PDOs (Peoples’ Democratic Organizations) such as Oromo Peoples’ Democratic Organization (OPDO) and present them as the representatives of the  people of Ethiopia.
  • The TPLF, which represents only 5-6% of the total population of Ethiopia, monopolized political and economic power, ignoring the rights of the other 95% of the Ethiopian population.
  • The OPDO has no power, but serve as messengers and translators for the TPLF to penetrate into Oromia.
  • TPLF- owned companies such as  the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigrai (EFFORT)[7] and Mesfin Engineering took all opportunities to control businesses in Oromia and other regions. This made the TPLF members, including the military commanders,  millionaires while the area’s business community  members were left powerless
  • The resources of Oromo, Gambela and Benshangule people have been exploited not only by the TPLF members, but also by TPLF partner foreign government. For example,  for Hasen Guleid , the Djibouti president over 1000 hectares of Oromo land from Bale,Dodola has been granted for
  • Tens of thousands of  hectares of Oromo, Gambela and Benshangule lands have been leased to foreign investors at cheap prices without consent and consultations with the land owners.  Millions have been evicted from their livelihoods and became homeless, jobless and beggars.

Recommendations:

  1. The UN Security Council member states- of which Ethiopia is one-should hold the Ethiopian government accountable for its arbitrary arrests, killings and tortures of Oromo’s peaceful protesters
  2. The UN Human Rights Council, of which Ethiopia is a member, should hold the Ethiopian government accountable for its arbitrary arrests, killings and tortures of Oromo’s peaceful protesters
  3. Both UN Councils, of which Ethiopia is a member, must ask Ethiopia to immediately allow a neutral body to enter Ethiopia and investigate the crimes against humanity that the Ethiopian Government is committing against Oromo
The HRLHA is a non-political organization that attempts to challenge abuses of human rights of the people of various nations and nationalities in the Horn of Africa. It works to defend fundamental human rights, including freedoms of thought, expression, movement and association. It also works to raise the awareness of individuals about their own basic human rights and those of others. It encourages respect for laws and due process. It promotes the growth and development of free and vigorous civil societies.

Deaths Reported as Protests Flare in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region

  • Region has seen anti-government demonstrations since November
  • Government acknowledges some deaths, calls demos illegal

(Bloomberg) — Protests in Ethiopia’s Oromia region turned deadly, the government and witnesses said, the latest in a wave of unrest that’s posed one of the biggest challenges to the African nation’s ruling coalition since it came to power 25 years ago.

Chanting crowds gathered in Ambo in central Oromia early Saturday, with one person killed by security forces as they tried to disperse protesters, resident Solan Terfasa said by phone. In Nekemte, western Oromia, witness Aga Wirtu said he saw at least four people shot dead in a crackdown on demonstrators. Communications Minister Getachew Reda called the protests illegal.

The Oromo comprise about one-third of Ethiopia’s population of almost 100 million people. Protesters complain of Oromo farmers being unjustly evicted for development projects and a lack of autonomy in an authoritarian system, despite the group administering its own region in a multi-ethnic federation.
Ibsa Gutuma, a witness in Haramaya, eastern Oromia, said he’d seen seven people killed by security forces as demonstrators converged on the town. Protesters also gathered in Woliso town, about 111 kilometers (69 miles) southwest of the capital, Addis Ababa, according to Seyoum Teshome, a university lecturer.
Getachew said there had been deaths in West Arsi, a zone of the Oromia region, and possibly other areas. “There has to be people responsible for organizing the demonstrations, so they are also responsible for the consequences,” he said by phone.

Ethiopian security forces have killed more than 400 people and arrested tens of thousands during unrest in the Oromia region that began in November, Human Rights Watch said in June. The government says officers have been killed and property damaged during the protests.

(Horn Affairs) — Ethiopia’s populous regions were hit by protests on Saturday, amid social media blackout and government warnings. At least fifteen lives were lost.

Ethiopia’s largest region Oromia was hit by at least a dozen simultaneous protests on Saturday morning.

Activists have been calling for a region-wide rally, dubbed grand ‪#‎OromoProtests, for today through facebook. The call for demonstration came a day after the massive rally in Gondar city, Amhara region, last Sunday, which went on peacefully, despite government’s warning against it.

OromoProtest activists demanded the government should let similar protests in Oromia. Hundreds have died in the months long protests in Oromia.

The activists called for protests in all districts and zonal capitals of the region as well as in Addis Ababa for Saturday.

HornAffairs was able to confirm demonstrations took place in two dozen locations West Arsi, East Hararghe, West Shewa, in South West Shewa, West Welega and East Welga zones.

Hundreds staged tried to stage a demonstration in Addis Ababa. Police dispersed the protesters and detained some.

The protests turned deadly in some areas.

HornAffairs learned five civilians were killed in Nekempte, Welega, and three in Shashemene, W. Arsi.

According to one source, there are multiple places of unrest in W. Arsi zone.

NGO staff evacuated yesterday their offices in Hirna and Chiro in W. Hararghe and Bedeno and Grawa in E. Hararghe, according to HornAffairs sources. They said there was “cultural dancing and festivity” denouncing the government in those areas which led the NGOs wary of an imprending unrest.

In Amhara region, the city Gondar which had a peaceful demonstration last Sunday was hit by riot on Friday and Saturday.

A group of youth returning from a court hearing of a suspect detained three weeks ago. It is to be recalled the detention of the suspect and his colleagues, who are mostly members of the Wolqait committee, led to unrest in July when five civilians and eleven security officers died.

The riot on Friday led to a clash with the regional special force that cost two lives and destruction of property. Unlike the unrest three weeks ago, armed men from nearby rural Woredas were blocked from entering the city by military forces in outskirts of the city.

The riot continued today in a section of the city called Arada. Several civilians died as the regional special police forcefully dispersed the crowd.

According to local people, a new anti-riot unit was deployed yesterday with different rules of engagement – with instructions to take “strong action.” Federal police is stationed in several locations but does seem to have been actively engaged.

According to one source, there are tensions and clashes with security forces in semi-rural areas of north Gondar zone.

HornAffairs received reports of incidents in multiple areas of North Gondar and South Gondar zones, namely, Chauhit, Koladeba, Chelega, Azezo and Gaint.

Inspired by last Sunday’s demonstration, activists had called for demonstrations in several areas of Amhara region for Saturday including Debre Tabor.

Thousands held demonstrations in Debre Tabor around noon. The protest later turned into a deadly clash with security forces. The details are not clear yet.

Activists have called a demonstration in the regional capital Bahir dar for Sunday.

Amhara region president Gedu Andargachew appeared on tv for the first time in three weeks yesterday to warn against planned demonstrations. He denounced last Sunday’s demonstration citing the presence of armed men and anti-constitutional slogans. Activists claim carrying arms is a local culture and deterrent of unduly use of force by the police.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Oromia President Muktar Kedir gave similar statements of warning that the planned protests were “unlawful demonstrations” citing that there have not been formal notification to the government.

It is to be noted, however, the government rarely allows protests rallies.

Social media has been shut down in most parts of the country since Friday evening.

(Ynetnews) — Following the deaths of two protesters in the Ethiopian city of Gondar, the Israeli Foreign Ministry has warned Israeli travelers from visiting the city; land reform protests have also spread to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian security forces shot tear gas and closed roads in major cities throughout the country on Saturday as demonstrators protested against land reforms and alleged human rights abuses being carried out by the government.

Additionally, two protesters were killed in clashes with police in the old city of Gondar over land disputes Friday. The Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem issued a travel warning for Israelis against travelling to the city. The city was the center for Ethiopian Jewry, and many Israelis travel there to see what Jewish life was like in the east African nation.

On Saturday, Hundreds of people gathered in Mescal square in the center of Addis Ababa only to be dispursed by the police. Protests also broke out in the towns of Waliso and Ambo, both in Oromiya province. Eyewitness reports say that soldiers closed the roads and shot in the air. There is a large university in Ambo.

There are reports that the internet in Addis Ababa has been cut. It is not yet clear if this is due to the government.

There have been several protests in the central Oromiya province of the country demonstrating against a plan to annex some of the territory in order to expand the Ethiopian Capital Addis Ababa.

The catalyst for demonstrations in Ethiopia is a controversial land development plan put forth by the Ethiopian government which was designed to help investment and industrialize the Ethiopian agriculture sector. Small protests erupted when the plan was originally developed in 2014.

The plans were shelved following fierce opposition from the residents of the area, yet there are continued protests due to alleged violations of human rights. The protestors want people arrested during the demonstrations to be freed.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has also called upon Israelis in Ethiopia to remain alert in cities in central and southern Ethiopia and to stay away from protests. The ministry also suggests staying more than ten kilometers away from the Ethiopia-Eritrea border, the Ethiopian-Sudanese border, the Ethiopian-South Sudanese border, and the Ethiopian-Kenyan border.

Dozens arrested in Ethiopia anti-government protest

Dozens arrested in Ethiopia anti-government protest

Addis Ababa (AFP) – At least seven people were killed during fresh clashes between police and anti-government protesters in western Ethiopia on Saturday, local sources said, while the ethnic unrest also reached the capital Addis Ababa for the first time.

Saturday’s rally in the capital was called by opposition groups from the Oromo, Ethiopia’s main ethnic group.

Some 500 people gathered amid a heavy police presence on the capital’s main Meskel Square shouting slogans such as “we want our freedom” and “free our political prisoners.”

Police swiftly moved in to break up the protest.

The other main ethnic group, the Amhara, has also held rallies in recent weeks.

Both groups, which between them make up some 80 percent of the population, complain that they suffer discrimination in favour of ethnic Tigrayans, who they say occupy the key jobs in the government and security forces.

Sources in western Ethiopia said that at least seven people were killed during the clashes in Nemekte, in the Oromo region Saturday, though no details emerged.

In Addis Ababa, police made dozens of arrests during the anti-government demonstration which came less than a week after thousands of people from the Amhara group joined a demonstration in the northern city of Gondar.

“This is a mass movement of civil disobedience which is not organized by political parties,” Merera Gudina, chairman of the Oromo People’s Congress group told AFP.

“People are totally fed up with this regime and expressing their anger everywhere”.

Although small, Saturday’s Addis rally was significant in that it was the first of its kind in the capital.

Also Saturday, local people told AFP there had been further rallies and clashes with police in the Oromo city of Ambo. There was also a call for a rally on Sunday in Baher Dar in the Amhara region.

Prime Minister Haile Mariam Dessalegn had Friday announced a ban on demonstrations which “threaten national unity” and called on police to use all means at their disposal to prevent them.

Authorities have blocked access to social media, the activists’ key channel for such rallying calls, since Friday.

Internet access was nearly impossible Saturday in Addis Ababa itself, an AFP journalist said.

Before news of Saturday’s fatalities came in, Ethiopian authorities said at least a dozen people had been killed in clashes with police over territorial disputes in recent weeks.

US and EU: An accomplice to TPLF Genocide in Ethiopia

Obama administration meeting with TPLF oligarchs in Washington, D.C

Obama administration meeting with TPLF oligarchs in Washington, D.C

(Madote) — By now it must be clear to every Ethiopian that the western media is neither free nor impartial. Everything it does is intertwined with the western interest. If the news does not serve the western interest, thousands of people could disappear without the world population hearing a single word about their demise. Conversely, if the news serves the western interest, even the death of one person could be a big deal. Although both countries are in the same region, compared to the news coverage given to the popular uprising in Egypt, you could say the western media coverage of the current TPLF minority regime genocide of the Amhara and Oromo people in Ethiopia is nothing. This is mainly because the western TV networks need a green light from their governments to report the news. No green light means no coverage. That explains the deafening silence of CNN and other big TV networks on the genocide the TPLF minority regime has unleashed on the innocent Amhara and Oromo people in Ethiopia.

Imagine if this were in Eritrea, The Martine Plaut’s, The Leonard Vincent’s, The Dan conell’s, and others could have made a big noise out of it. In fact, the monitoring group’s and the Keetharuth’s could have even pushed it to the security council and made even a bigger news out of it. But when it comes to Ethiopia you do not hear them saying even a single word. The reason is they do not have the green light from their financial backers to talk about it. If you incentivized people to act in a certain way, they will act the way you want them to act. Hence the so called human right advocates, UN agencies and News stations are incentivized to protect western interests. That is why so many people have a reasonable suspicion about the mission of these institutions and are often tend to reject it.

Currently the Oromo and Amhara people, all over Ethiopia, are voicing their opposition to the TPLF, Tigray minority looters, who happen to control the current government in Ethiopia. The opposition by the Amhara and Oromo people to the TPLF minority rule in Ethiopia is important for so many reasons:

1. It is an opposition to a minority by a majority.

The Amhara’s and Oromo’s, who make 80% of the population of Ethiopia, are opposing the TPLF minority regime that makes less than one percent of the 6% Tigray population. If the western media daily preaching for democracy, rule by the majority and human right was really from the heart, then the current majority voice in Ethiopia could have mattered and gotten a wide coverage. Again when it comes to Ethiopia, it is easy to learn that western interest comes before human rights and democracy. TPLF is an anchor messenger of the western world in the horn of Africa. Hence for the western world it is better to support the messenger that makes less than 1% of the people of Ethiopia than the will of the 80% Ethiopians. That is how the western system works.

2. It is an opposition to Economic injustice.

Although the TPLF minority regime in Ethiopia makes less than one percent of the 6% Tigreans, it controls almost 90% of the Ethiopian economy. It placed its supporters who are mainly Tigreans in Federal government positions, established parastatal institutions that run the economy, and takes fertile land from the Amhara’s and Oromo’s to settle minority Tigreans in Addis Ababa, Wolakite-zegede and Wollo. There is no better Testament to TPLF tribalism than the recent revelations that the employees of the office of the late prime minister of Ethiopia Meles Zenawi, who hails from Tigray, were all Tigreans. To continue resettling Tigreans in other regions in Ethiopia TPLF continues to place vibrant cities in Ethiopia under the federal government. A city Under federal government of Ethiopia means under the control of Tigreans because the federal government is controlled by Tigreans. While the Oromo’s are fighting Tigrean expansion and settlement in Addis Ababa, the Amhara’s are fighting the looting and annexation of their fertile land of Wolkaite-Zegede by Tigray state, which is the foot hold of TPLF.

3. It is an opposition to TPLF hidden agenda.

Everyone knows that TPLF is preparing its foothold Tigray state for future independent country. If that was not the case, there is no reason for TPLF to take land from Wollo, Gonder and Eritrea to create the greater Tigray. If TPLF believed in one Ethiopia, it would let every Ethiopian move all over Ethiopia freely to make an ends-meat. Borders should not have mattered at all. There is no reason to annex fertile land from neighboring states and give it to its foothold Tigray region. TPLF land grab is not limited to within Ethiopia. Due to TPLF’s false land claim from an independent country Eritrea, about 70,000 Ethiopian solders lost their life during the 1998-2000 border war. Later the Eritrean-Ethiopia border commission in The Hague ruled the flash point Badme belongs to Eritrea. TPLF’s continuous occupation of Badme, despite the border commission’s ruling, and repeated conflict with Eritrea explains TPLF’s determination to expand Tigray at any cost, off course cost paid by the people of Ethiopia.

4. It is an opposition to Tyranny.

It cannot be further from the Truth If I say the minority TPLF regime is an occupying Army in Ethiopia sponsored by the US and EU. The minority TPLF regime steals elections, and when the Ethiopian people mount an opposition to TPLF’s stealing voting ballots, it goes on a killing spree without any repercussions from its sponsors. In the year 2000, more than 200 Ethiopians, who opposed the TPLF’s vote stealing, were killed in execution style and more than 50,000 were arrested. As a revenge to ONLF’s attack on Chines’ gas exploration facilities in Ogden, TPLF carpet bombed the Ogden region and people fled to refugee camps in Kenya. Last year about 700 Oromo’s youth and women were killed because they opposed the confiscation of their land surrounding Addis Ababa for Tigrean resettlement in Addis Ababa. The killing in Gondar and other places continues even as you read this article. In return for all this atrocities TPLF is unleashing on the Ethiopian people, it is rewarded by a significant money from the US and the EU and a seat in the United security council.

5 It is an opposition to ethnic based politics, regionalism and TPLF divide and rule policy.

The fact that TPLF makes less than one percent of the 6% Tigreans, it had to cut and slice the Ethiopian people into ethnic groups and work hard to turn them against each other. That policy may have worked for the last 25 years. However recently the Ethiopian people realized the consequences of the wicked TPLF divide and rule policy and are coming together to challenge it. The unity among the Oromo’s, Amhara’s, Christians and Moslems witnessed recently is a big blow to the TPLF minority regime and may be the single most weapon that could help them to send the TPLF minority regime back to Tigray. The Ethiopian people understood that it is only when they unite they become strong.

In conclusion, the Ethiopian people should not expect the western media to cover their opposition to the TPLF minority regime unless the western world thinks TPLF rule in Ethiopia is coming to an end. Hence the mission of the current opposition in Ethiopia should be to show the western world that TPLF is not a feasible western partner anymore and they have to find a new one, that is the Ethiopian people.

Victory to the Masses.

(#GrandMarch4Oromia, 8 August 2016) — At least sixty people were killed during fresh clashes between police and anti-government protesters in more than 200 Oromia cities and towns since 6 August 2016.

Saturday’s grand rally was called by Oromo activists to express deep-seated mass grievances, country-wide anguish and suffering, widespread violation of rights that is perpetrated by the TPLF regime over the past several decades.

In the past 9 months alone, the Oromo people saw one of the bloodiest military response from the regime that murdered over 600 lives, shot and injured over 5000 persons, incarcerated tens of thousands and caused forced disappearances of thousands.

The regime has also rendered hundreds of thousands landless, jobless, homeless, and placeless. It has demolished houses of thousands who have been rendered homeless and left out in the punitively cruel cold weather of the rainy season. All this is mainly, although not merely, because of the people’s decision to protest the government’s Master Plan that illegally and unconstitutionally annexed their ancestral lands in and around the Capital Finfinnee/Addis Ababa.

This Grand Rally was staged in all the major cities and district towns of Oromia. This rally was a peaceful rally expressing the people’s general yearning for a just peace.

More than 100,000 people were participated on the ‪#‎GrandMrach4Oromia‬ in all major cities and district towns of Oromia. More than 1000 people gathered amid a heavy police presence on the capital’s main Meskel Square shouting slogans such as “we want our freedom” and “free our political prisoners.”

Police swiftly moved in to break up the protest.

“This is a mass movement of civil disobedience which is not organised by political parties,” Merera Gudina, chairperson of the Oromo People’s Congress group told AFP.

“People are totally fed up with this regime and expressing their anger everywhere”.

August 8, 2016 (Aljazeera) — At least 33 people were shot dead by security forces in Ethiopia at the weekend in protests linked to an aborted government attempt to commandeer local land, opposition party officials said.

Police fired tear gas and blocked roads to several towns in the vast Oromia region as demonstrations erupted after a call from a spontaneous social media movement.

Ethiopian authorities had imposed a blanket internet blockade over the weekend.

Oromia saw unrest for several months until early this year, sparked by plans to allocate farmland in the region surrounding the capital for development.

Authorities scrapped the land scheme in January, but protests have flared again over the continued detention of opposition demonstrators.

At the weekend, protesters chanted anti-government slogans and waved dissident flags. Some demanded the release of jailed opposition politicians.

“So far, we have compiled a list of 33 protesters killed by armed security forces that included police and soldiers but I am very sure the list will grow,” Mulatu Gemechu, Deputy Chairman of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, told the Reuters news agency.

The deaths took place in at least 10 towns across Oromia, he said, including Ambo, Dembi Dolo, and Nekemt – areas that were engulfed by previous rounds of protests.

“Twenty-six people have also been injured, while several have been detained,” Mulatu said. Three members of his party were also being held, he said.

Government officials were not immediately available for comment, Reuters said.

The state-owned Ethiopian News Agency said “illegal protests” staged by “anti-peace forces” had been brought under control, but it did not mention casualties.

Oromia is the second region to be hit by unrest in the past few days. In Amhara, at least two people were killed in the ancient city of Gonder in clashes over the status of a disputed territory.

Tensions have been rumbling for two decades over the status of Wolkayt district – a stretch of land that protesters from Amhara say was illegally incorporated into the neighbouring Tigray region to the north.

Violent weekend clashes between protesters and security forces claimed the lives of more than a dozen people across Ethiopia, while hundreds staged a rare anti-government demonstration in the capital after calls via social media.

The government again blocked the Internet over the weekend, alleging that “anti-peace elements” based outside abroad and supported by online activists are to blame for the violence. Demonstrations took place despite the government’s warning that it would take measures against unauthorized rallies.

The government announced Sunday that seven protesters died in the northern Amhara region’s capital, Bahir Dar, where protesters demanded the reinstatement of the Wolqayit area in the Tigrary region back to the Amhara administration. The arrest of members of a committee set up to oversee the reinstatement led to violent clashes over the past week.

The arrests also ignited weekend demonstrations in the Oromia region, where online activists and witnesses in at least three towns said many casualties occurred.

Protesters in Oromia have demanded the release of people detained in massive demonstrations earlier this year against plans by the capital, Addis Ababa, to expand its territory into adjacent Oromia lands. The proposal has since been retracted.

Witnesses who insisted on speaking to The Associated Press anonymously for fear of reprisals said anti-riot police also used force Saturday to disperse hundreds of protesters in Addis Ababa who used the Oromia and Amhara issues to vent their anger at the government and call for political freedom.

“It has now become clear that people cannot hold peaceful protests in Ethiopia,” said Seyoum Teshome, a blogger who monitored the demonstrations. “Regional police forces are being replaced by the army, leaving many areas to be under the military’s control.”

Ethiopia, a close security ally of the West, is often accused by rights groups of stifling dissent.

Ethiopia Protest August 2016: Amid Internet Ban, Rally Against Government Leaves At Least 33 Dead

(International Business Times) — The two largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia took part in a massive anti-government protest over the weekend that has claimed dozens of lives. The protesters demonstrated against alleged government discrimination and human rights violations.

In Ethiopia, majority of the general population is made up of the Oromo and Amhara ethnic groups. Protests first began last November when the government had plans to expand the capital into Oromia, which would in turn displace Oromo farmers in the region. After the government dropped their expansion plans, demonstrations continued to spotlight other issues impacting the community.

Dozens of protesters in the nation’s capital, Addis Ababa, were arrested on Saturday, BBC News reported. Things were far more violent in other parts of the country. According to the government, seven protesters died in Bahir Dar, a city located in the Amhara region. Demonstrations in the Oromia region reportedly claimed lives as well, with Oromo activists claiming at least 33 protestors were shot by police.

“So far, we have compiled a list of 33 protesters killed by armed security forces that included police and soldiers but I am very sure the list will grow,” Mulatu Gemechu, deputy chairman of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, told Reuters.

In light of the protests, the government has responded by banning unauthorized public demonstrations and blocking social media. Officials claimed online activists were responsible for the outcry. Prime Minister Haile Mariam Dessalegn announced Friday the internet ban stating they, “threaten national unity.”

“It has now become clear that people cannot hold peaceful protests in Ethiopia,” Seyoum Teshome, a blogger following the demonstrations, told The Associated Press. “Regional police forces are being replaced by the army, leaving many areas to be under the military’s control.”
